How far should they go to ban smoking - recently in the news it said "they" are thinking of making it a chargable offence is you are caught smoking in a vehicle that also has children riding in it.

Do you think this is to far?

I'm not a smoker - and personally am glad there is no longer smoking in resturants, malls or bars.
In your own home - in your own car should be your own choice. I don't think there is a smoker out there that doesn't know the effects of smoking. If they are going to put such strict restraints on smoking and if smoking is so bad for people why the heck don't they just make it illegal. ( I know the power of the large corporations, money and taxes)

I personally think that it isn't too far to make it a chargeable offense if you're smoking around children. My entire life, I've lived in non-smoking environments. My mom hated it, and when I went to university, they had just outlawed smoking in public buildings (this was a couple of years ago in Nova Scotia). Living here, I'm stuck with neighbours that smoke like chimneys, and I find that I'm getting sick more often, and it's usually worse than what I'm used to.
The way I see it, if I'm being affected this much, and I'm 25, how much worse could it be for a 4 or 5 year old?

Because there are no laws prohibiting people from exposing others to this dangerous and nasty habit, I'm stuck suffering just because I can't afford to move.

Personally, I wish smoking was outlawed entirely, however, I know that won't solve the problem.

Sorry this post was so long; I needed to vent!!

I don't smoke but have always been around smokers.I'm glad about the banning in public places but once a person is in their own home it's their own affair....you can only push regulations so far.In a car with children is not the best of ideas as it's a closed environment.
As for ever making smoking illegal.......about as much chance as them admitting to a cure for the cold....too much money being made.

People will argue that all the money the government takes in on the taxes from the sale of tobacco is more than used up on the medical side. I guess it's a cache 22 situation. I'm a smoker trying to quit and if I couldn't buy smokes, maybe I'd be forced to quit.
Then the jails would be full of people like me who flipped out on a nicotine fit.
Really, people who never smoked don't understand the addiction. My hat is off to those who have found a way to quit. Maybe I'll be one of you someday.

Hi Every1 wave

I am a "closet smoker"rolling on the floor laughing rolling on the floor laughing rolling on the floor laughing

Which means I no longer smoke, car, at the computer, malls etc... I now smoke 1 pack which lasts me a week and a couple of days.

When I do smoke it is in one area in my home, and hoping to quit on my 60th birthdaythumbs up

So I call myself a closet smoker, no one see's me smoking dunno

I honestly do beleive they should make it a offense for smoking with children in the car, I have to many times seen while picking up croceries both parents smoking, with a couple of children, toddlers to newborn in the back seat, and it does disturb me very much so barf

My 2 cents wine

It drives me nuts, some of these non-smokers, with thier holier than thou additude. Not all non-smokers are like that, but a great deal of them are, and I can't stand it. I smoke, hell I enjoy getting up, having my first coffee in the morning, and a cigarette. If I'm in a group of people and I notice that some, or even one of them don't smoke, I'll go somewhere away from them when I wanna light up. I FINALLY met someone (Sorry Anne, I still wish though), who also smokes and it works out great.... so far. Annette (close, huh Anne ?) and I will be watching a movie on the DVD and without even thinking, we'll both light up pretty much at the same time. Whenever someone complains about us smoking, we just look at each other and start to giggle..So for you non-smokers, my hats off to you for making your life a healthier one, but PLEASE don't piss in my cornflakes, because I do. I enjoy it, and plan to go to my grave with a smoke in my mouth

Smoking in the closet sounds sooo naughty lol laugh

But with tobacco and alcohol there needs to be a phase out period, perhaps we're in it. I may get thumped but alcohol is just as damaging as tobacco. The tax spending will always be controversial. Actually the effects of second hand smoke is also controversial, I agree not good though.

For a government to enforce these things in the private (family) lives is not something I am in favor of. Why not say if you are a smoker, ya can't have kids ....come on. BULL. BUT WE SELL IT!! HA HA ..whatever.

I'm a long term smoker and drinker. Remember when smoking in the theatre, even the hospital was ok. But do agree with the smoking ban in public places for sure. I know there are responsible people too, but in general there is no argument from me that tobacco and alcohol is statistically unhealthy/damaging on society, health wise.

If governments want to help protect children there is a lot of work to do,,, mostly within the organization/agency!
