Love Has Many Shades of Red

The sword pierced through my chest pinning me to the earth and as I gazed up I could see the faint blur of a pale figure dressed in black. With my final act of strength I reached my hand towards the figure. As they declined my grasp for life my muscles gave and my arm fell to the ground. I lied there on the brink of annihilation and with no one left to turn to, I gave into the darkness.

Always a small patch of clouds, a bright white against the deep blue sky. So peaceful up there, so tranquil. And then theres earth... A wretched pile of waste, infested with dark dangerous creatures. From ogres to vampires, to the worst of all; humans. Those humans, pitifully creatures. Wallowing in filth, catching fires, creating utter chaos wherever they tread, and yet; we still help as many as we can. Why we are bound to watching over all our creatures, well, no one could answer that. No one but the creator, and he has long since past away. I look down at the dead trees, the black soil (if you can even call their earth soil) and cant help but wonder why? Why do they do this, and why are they so foreign to us, yet look so alike.

Tomorrow my only escape is earth, they could never find me down there. Could they?

I live in an utopia, yet I am drawn to the mud. My world is perfect... Too perfect. The so called love I am yet to receive is not love, it's torture. So for now I will sleep the remainder of the day away, and as soon as the sun begins it's rise on our horizon, that's when I make my escape.

Two Vampiric lovers sit on a cliff, legs gently rocking foreword and back as they hold hands in the light of the full moon. A shooting star is seen as it zips across the sky. It crashes toward earth but leaves no sound of impact nor a crater. The two lovers investigate only to find a path of luscious green life heading off into the forest. They, like many others, will find very little interest in this phenomenon. For now.

Struggling to breath in this poisonous world the fugitive has stumbled on a strange place. Murdered trees with clay and metal support themselves across the lifeless field of rock and dirt.

Well educated in the humans and many other languages, carved into the skin of a tree, he read; Fine cloth and leathers at low prices. Looking around he sees many humans dressed in ragged clothes, and in an attempt to fit in he goes to the point of purchasing real human clothing. He grabbed a torn blanket and covered his bare body. The currently nameless stranger walks into the store, and after the clerk stares down the bump hidden beneath the blanket on his back, asks if there is anything he can do to help.

"Is there anyway I can purchase some kind of clothing from you? Something clean and comfortable, oh and preferably a dark color?"

"Of course" replied the clerk, "Well... If you have the money anyway. No offense but I've had to deal with many beggars coming in and trying to run off with my wares."

"Oh.. Money? What do you accept?"

"Gold, silver, bronze coins, as well as various gems," he said with a greedy smirk. "Or if your one of those up-to-date fellows then you can gimme some of that paper junk the king issued throughout the land. Personally I do not think it's worth anything. I mean it's unattractive thin paper with a picture of that self absorbed tyrant, he is nothing but a.." he keeps on mumbling various rude thing about his king.

"OK.... Well what can I get with this?" He says as he reaches into a small pouch he had been tightly grasping onto and pulled out a perfectly rounded ball of gold.

The clerk immediately stops his rambling, and after a few blinks of disbelief he stairs greedily at the ball of gold. All he has to reply with is one word, "Anything." With that, the stranger cruises along the aisles and picks out a good three full outfits and a large pack for carrying these items. He tosses the gold nugget at the clerk, and takes his leave. As he steps into the streets he's left to a sound of the clerk hitting the floor with a *thud*, a gold nugget in his dirty little human hands, and quite possibly the biggest smile in town.

After the encounter with the shopkeeper I couldn't help but wonder; are all creatures down here that greasy and ugly. It's a rude and ignorant assumption but it was something I could not stop asking myself. Why am I still here, from what I've seen in less then a few hours I really do not want to be here. I pondered this ever since I left the shop until I was stopped in the park. The park.... Yes it was a park, but in the loosest sense of the word; with its trees of charcoal, its blood soaked soil, and those lovely assortments of bones in the bushes. All these thoughts were mashed between being stopped in the park and kissed in the face with the cold fist of a shady figure.

"Ow! Who do you think you are and what gave you the right to do that to me!?" I had asked furiously.

"We are the Black Arm Gang and being the generous type, we have decided to give you ten seconds to get out of our territory or every ounce of your blood will be spilled where you stand!" Shouted a tall pale vampire bulging with muscle, glowing with youthful energy, and ready to kill anything that attempts to challenge his leadership. I backed up a couple steps and everything slowly came into focus. Seeing a dozen cold pale creatures I had time to rethink my plan.

"Alright, ill leave, just let me get out of here. It was an accident."

Although I backed down the path in an attempt to escape, they continued their pursuit, slowly in a pack-like formation. The leader let the others pass and reached over to pull his reluctant gal over to him. Although I was facing possible death I could not pull my eyes from her. She was the most beautiful woman I had ever seen. Her long dark hair flowed in the breeze and her pale flawless skin shone bright in the midnight moon. Her eyes were full of sorrow and regret but I could also tell she felt sympathy for me. Sympathy was something I wanted nothing of.

Regardless of race, a male has something in him that pushes him to impress his possible mate, and I was no exception. Immediately I stopped backing up and with a simple chant was able to conjure up a weightless bright white sword. It was my old sword from back in the day "Back off! I tried to leave but you had to push me didn't you?!" I shouted.

I felt a sudden burst of strength and adrenaline once I brought out my sword, and to add to it I had the courage in knowing she was watching. My confidence also skyrocketed when I saw them shield themselves at the mere sight of the weapon. It was strange.

"Ah, so your vampires are you?" And with that comment I had realized... She was a vampire as well. My heart sunk. I sheathed my sword and took off, leaving them half blinded and to regather their violent thoughts.

The stranger fled his Vampiric foes only looking back to see if they would chase him. While darting into the forest he saw out of the corner of his eye, an agile vampiress disappearing into the very same forest some 50 yards away. Taking caution yet nearly overpowered with curiosity, he made his way closer towards the general direction of the female vampire in hopes it would be the one he desired. After a hour of fleeing and searching he spoted something sitting against a tree in the distance. Slowly he made his way closer and closer until finally, the silence was broken.

"Well hey there stranger. You seemed to have run off before I could get your name", She said with a smirk.

"I don't know if you're trying to be cute, friendly or insulting but why are you following me?" He asked with a mixed tone of superiority and fear.

"Well... Aside from notice you eying me, stopping not for even a blink, I would have to say its because you stood up to him, even if for a moment. To be honest, I like that kind of courage in a guy." she replied as her eyes looked up at me as though they were saying, "How is that for an answer?".

He looked stunned as he gradually made his way closer to the woman by the tree. He knew not to let his guard down, but there was something about this one that knocked down every one of his mental defenses. He sat by her on the opposite side of the tree and asked quietly as though to himself, "Who are you?"

Smiling like she had found a blood bank with the door wide open she relied, "I don't think I have received your name yet, and seeing as I asked first, I think you should answer first."

"My name is Kainyan (Cane+Ya+N), now may I ask for yours?"

Satisfied with his answer she replies, "My name is Hikari, and im glad to meet you Kainyan. You have a very interesting name."

Not sure on whether she tried to compliment him or insult him he just said, "I could say the same thing about yours."

Hikari slowly and not so subtly scooted closer to him in an attempt to flirt.

"So Kainyan, what brought you to tread my...", She pauses for a moment before continuing, "My leaders territory?"

"Leader? It seemed to me like you were lovers." Quickly Kainyan shut up knowing that he may have said something he would regret.

"Lovers?!", she shouted. "I wish that blood thirsty monster would drop dead!"

"I'm sorry. Its just the way he held you close, and. If he is just your leader why don't you abandon him and those brutes that follow him around?" He asked her quietly and somewhat fearfully.

"If I leave him now he may not find me, but he is sure to track my human family down. I joined him because it was the only way to keep them safe, and even by leaving for a few hours as I did now I'm risking their lives. In fact, I think I should leave.", she said as she looked around frantically.

"Your safe right now, I promise", Kainyan said with a reassuring voice.

"I told you that it's not me I fear for, it's my family! Please, I have to go, I'm sorry." was the last thing he heard her say as he watched tears roll down her face.

She quickly ran over and wrapped her arms around him constricting his arms in a way. Her hug was heartfelt but he was still uncomfortable with being unable to move his arms. What he could not see was her face and her hands. Hikari looked up and motioned with her hands, and in moments the sky was raining vampires. They dropped from the trees and began charging for him. Kainyan could not break free from her grasp with his arms strength alone so he decided there was only one way out. With one powerful flex of his chest, his shirt exploded into little pieces and out came an amazing site. Two large white wings sprung from back, emitting a slight white glow and adding to his already loving aura, extended out with amazing reach. The sheer surprise knocked several vampires on their backs and made Hikari release her grip and regain her balance. Kainyan conjured up his sword and charged at a couple vampires. As they leapt out his way he jumped and flapped once to propel himself far into the air. He turned around and look down, still rising farther into the sky. As he watched the one girl he may have loved --if only she were not so corrupt-- his heart sank.

The hours were late and it was time to find shelter on the ground. He could see what appeared to be a lake down below and landed nearby. His eyes were not accustom to darkness like this so he quickly found shelter in a sturdy tree. Bare chest and wings exposed he opened his backpack for another shirt. The night had its affect on his fatigue and no more than five minutes after his shirt was on, he was fast asleep in the safely of the trees.

"AAAaaahhhhhhhh!!!". A loud scream awakens the entire forest, including Kainyan who was resting peacefully in the treetops.

"Whoa! What in the world is that?!" Shouted Kainyan as he tightly grabbed the nearest tree branch in terror.

Immediately Kainyan leapt from the tree and began running toward the sound. As he starts to see the two figures in an argument, he hears a loud *Bang*. To his surprise neither of the two people move. More so to his surprise is the immense pain in his left shoulder and the red liquid leaking from within the pain. Kainyan stumbles to the nearest tree and takes cover. While searching for the origin of the shot, he over hears the two bickering.

"Tell me where he is or ill blow your brains out!", came from what sounded like an older males voice.

"Never! You have no right to hunt people like animals." Replied the young female with some kind of foreign accent.

"You are making a serious mistake little missy! If you do not care about yourself, than how about I tell my partner to fire once again? This time that intruder behind the tree wont survive!" He shouted.

Kainyan leaps to a different tree at the strange mans threat and continues trying to hide from the hidden enemy.

"What on earth is wrong with you?! I cant give away his position for the life of this stranger!" she shouted back. "But I cant let this poor man die either", She softly whispered to herself.

Kainyan placed his hand on the earth and life began to grow within seconds. He softly spoke to the earth as though it lived and breathed like you and I. He spoke gently for a few minutes, stood up and walked toward the older man wielding a large loud weapon.

As the sniper locked onto Kainyans head his aim seemed to move around slightly. After a few moments trying to readjust it he finally looked at the gun. To his surprise it was covered in vines, and so were his legs.

With a smirk Kainyan walked closer and closer to the violent man dealing so rudely with the young woman who appeared to be wearing a cloak. She glanced at him momentarily but than redirected her attention to the man with the gun. As Kainyan got closer the man pointed the gun at him. After a few failed threats he decided it was time to take action. Six rounds were fired off at Kainyan and the outcome was as expected.

Kainyan changed his direction and went toward the girl. As he stepped over the mans wounded and blood soaked body he kindly asked if there was anything he could do for her. In response to his question she darted toward Kenyan and wrapped her arms around him. This time Kainyan made sure he could have full control of his arms at all times during the hug. With a large smile on his face he asked another question.

"Who was that and why was he threatening you?" Kainyan asked in a somewhat worried tone.

She let go of him, took a few steps back, turned around and tilted her head down. She softly replied, "That was a bounty hunter..."

"What's a bounty hunter?" He asked absolutely clueless on the subject.

"Are you seriously? You have never heard of a bounty hunter?! Well.. I suppose he is just someone who hunts people down for money."

"Well why was he talking to you? I cant imagine someone like you getting into enough trouble to be killed for some cash." He said still confused about everything.

"Its not me who he was after; He wanted my brother. Jacob is always getting into trouble, and ever since he joined a gang he has been doing even worse things. Violent things." She said with a tear running down her face

"A gang?! Your not a vampire are you?!" Kainyan yelled as he took a couple steps back and prepared to defend himself

"Of course not", she replied in a monotone.

"Well than are you human?" He asked with fear of the answer.

As the girl turned around she slowly removed the hood of the cloak revealing something quite unexpected.

"Your ears, they, they are on top of your head? Ah, I get it now! Your a some kind of feline demon. That would explain the ears and the fur and the.." He was than interrupted by the cat girl.

"The claws?" She said in a eerily wicked voice. "Hehe, sorry, I enjoy frightening people sometimes." she said with a giggle.

"I can see that. You scared me once with the loud scream, twice with the man pointing a gun at you, and three times when you sounded quite evil. So, what's your name anyway?"

"My name is Callula, and what is yours?"

"I am known as Kainyan!" He said proudly with perfect posture and looking up off into the distance heroically.

"That's nice." She says as she walks up and pushes him backwards.

"GAH!" Kainyan yelps as he tries to regain his balance. "What was that for?!"

"Fun!" She says as all previous life threatening events seemed to have left her mind. "Whatcha gona do about it?" She says in a playfully challenging way.

"Oh you'll see!" He shouted.

Finally meeting someone with a positive altitude Kainyan rejoices by taking off after her and of course when she saw his intentions, she ran away giggling.

A tear falls from the sky. Tracing it back to the miserable being in the trees, it appears to have came from a bundle of black wings. Inside the wings there is a pale faced woman sobbing gently as she watches the man she selfishly gave away --for her own safety-- with another.

The vampires' tear hitting the forest floor sparked the sensitive ears of Callula. She quickly looks up at the trees but there is no one to be seen. Just as she turns back to focus on the game she gets tackled by Kainyan.

"That was too easy." He said with a smirk of victory.

"Yeah well, I thought I saw something in the trees a second ago, so don't think it was all you." She replied slightly upset at the unfair lose.

"Hmm.. I wonder what it could have been?" And immediately he remembers the vampire ambush just the night before. Quickly he asks, "Think we can go somewhere more open? With less chance of surprises?"

Quite confused by his question she simply replies with "Sure, I don't see why not."

After their short conversation, Callula leads Kainyan through the forest casually so she could have more time to ask real questions. After several minutes of silence she decides to barrage him with questions.

"So! Where do you live? Do you have a lover back home? Why did you save me? Why were you in the forest last night? How are you? Who are you really? Do you mind me asking all these questions? Did you know I don't need to breath between sentences? Answer!"

"Quiet! Please stay quiet. I am not a criminal. I am more of a fugitive from my homeland. They treated me unfairly and I decided to leave." Kainyan said as he tried to reassure her.

"I guess that explains why you haven't killed me yet, or worse. You're still not explaining everything! I need to know everything or I will not accompany you any longer." Callula said with a firm tone as though that was that.

"I cannot tell you everything you wish to know. If you need to leave than thats fine but if you talk to or come in contact with a man in unnaturally white armor, please run. For your own safty please run." He quietly pleads to her.

Callula turned her head away from Kainyan in discontent only to hear one final sentence.

"Callula, I will miss you, but this is the path I have chosen. I wish you luck and safety and perhaps we will meet again. Good-bye."

Quickly she turned her head back but it was too late. Kainyan was long gone. All she had to remember him by was the fond memories they briefly shared.

"Well this has been a magical experience thus far" Mumbled Kainyan to himself as he watched Callula wander off confused from afar.

"I may hate my father but I sure hope he knows what the demons are planning. Earth is a wasteland and I doubt a couple of blood thirsty demons will make it better than the humans did."

Kainyan began to follow the main road out of town. He decided it was best to follow the main road from the forest, seeing as he couldn't risk being captured by anyone. As he continued walking there was no escape from the most recent experiences he had endured. The vampire was a beauty but sadly, she only cared for herself. The demon was playful and cute, but she had a sense of dependence on others.

"Callula would never be right for me, but the vampire is far too different. Theres always the girl back home I suppose; Heh, yeah right. Shes far too much like my father and perhaps that's why she was chosen for me. Anyways, I'm on my own and I am sure to find someone somewhere who is right for me." He said to himself as the sun quickly began to drop.

"I better find shelter. Days and nights seem to have melded together for me lately. I need to get back on track with night and day again. Cursed confusing backwords world."

Quickly Kainyan found refuge against a tree deep enough in the forest to stay hidden, yet close enough to the road to find his way back.

"We need to find him at all costs!" Roared the king.

"Sire I understnad, but you cannot rush your men. Dealing
with the humans is..." The bishop said as he was quickly cut off by the kings.

"Quiet! I know exacally what the risks are with invading the humans lives. But this is a matter of survival. My son is the heir of the throne and is a magnificent leader if he could just put his heart away for a little while." The king said with a heavy sigh.

"Yes I know m'lord. He takes after his mother and there is very little we can do about that. You cannot force him to do what......
