OK so if I go this year... my drivers license and birth certificate are all I would need to get back into the US???

I've been thinking today about where I'd like to travel to next July since I have the whole month off work. I've loved the looks of Canada from the pictures I've seen and was talking to a friend earlier on the phone about going to Canada to visit. I was told that there is not much ID required to get into Canada and that possibly a drivers license would be enough to get me into Canada but when I came back to the United States I would be asked for a passport. What is the deal with this??? Anyone have any ideas???
