I try to take care of myself half way decent through exercise, cleanliness and keeping my hair groomed. That seems to be something I noticed most guys my age are starting to slack on. I just believe you need to work a little harder on keeping up the appearance as you age.
God is all righteous and a righteous judge that deals with continued unrighteous in a way that is above us because he is mightier than us. It said that God gave them time to repent and they did not so he imputed justice (wrath upon them) and will so again in the book of revelation. That is not cruelty but righteous justice.
If someone murdered a loved one of yours and a judge who was completely in control of the verdict assigned them to death, would that be cruel, or just. Conversely, if he let them off and granted freedom to them when they were clearly guilty, how would you feel about that judge.
But the great love of God is this: that while we are all guilty before him through our unrighteousness, he still provides a way in which he can remain just yet merciful to forgive us and wipe away our sins and the punishment of them. It's our choice. Take care.
Scriptures need to be rightly divided. I won't get into that long discussion here except to say that Romans through Philemon are the scriptures presented to the believers as well as non believers during this current age of grace.
The "guilt trips" you are talking about I assume are the laws and commandments. They are set forth to show you just how far from the perfection of God you are and your need for repentance and forgiveness.
You are like Paul the apostle kicking against the pricks stressfree. Believing there is a higher power or force but denying it is God.
That's a false statement. True believers know that Heaven is not earned but is a gift from God through Christ to all who will believe onto His righteousness, while forsaking our righteousness which is "filthy rags" because of sin in our lives.
