Sunken shipwrecks stretch out before us, while saltwater fish swim past our goggles and sea turtles nest near by. Yes, the waters off the Dry Tortuga Islands are quite a sight, and after completing my SCUBA certification I’m fascinated by the ocean’s depths… I just need a partner to help keep an eye out for sharks. Kidding kidding, with my military training I can handle myself and others. I really enjoy the water though, so as I finish getting my boating license and buying a boat, I’m looking forward to sunsets at sea with friends. When I was in the military in South Korea, I did a great deal of exploring. One time, while on a search for North Koreans, I stumbled upon a little shack, and a small Korean family insisted that I sit and eat with them. Even with broken English and more broken Hangul, we all had a great meal. Luckily, there were no North Koreans in the area!
After my service as a combat medic, I’m now a doctor and direct a substance abuse unit, so whether I’m helping someone overcome an addiction or treating a person recovering from a near-overdose, it’s all in a day’s work.
When I clock out though, I leave work behind by going a few rounds with the old punching bag or riding my bike. I’ll tear down and rebuild a classic motorcycle, or fix stuff around my house from replacing the carpet to repairing the electrical - I’m a bit of a jack of all trades. And being called “MacGyver” once by a friend because of how I can think outside the box now means I’m on everyone’s speed dial to help with things from medical questions to fixing things like leaky faucets. I also enjoy discussing subjects from science to literature, from language to art, so I’ve been told I’m a bit of a Renaissance man.
