And before anyone rips into me, i have no problem with Chester and Daryll, the line up performing here in 77 were superb, im just more a fan of "Gabriel era" genesis...(including Ant Phillips and John Mayhew!)...LZ...

Must say never thought genesis had such depth or musical ability only being familiar with the more mainstream songs e.g land of confusion, and of course phils solo career.
The keyboard sound is truly awesome,as is phils singing.

Well, lets see...
"trespass"...first "official" genesis album...a pointer for there direction through the next 4 years..."the knife"...
nursery chryme..."return of the giant hogweed"
"foxrtot"...regarded by many as there finest work..."get em out by friday" and "suppers ready" (22 mins) being the stand out pieces...
"selling england by the pound"...for me, this is where they really hit there stride, n'eer a duff track, "dancing with the moonlit knight", "firth of fifth", "battle of epping forest" and "the cinema show" all long tracks, all endlessly listenable, just dont try dancing to them rolling on the floor laughing ...
"genesis live"...performance of tracks from previous 4 albums...
worthwhile for the gabriel poetry on the album sleve...
and my personal favorite....(drum roll)
"the lamb lies down on broadway"...a concept double album, seen by some as a flawed work, seen by the "faithfull" as there magnum opus...
really hard to describe, but this is my unconditional favorite album of all time...still listening to it a couple of times a month, and thats since 1974...it really is a love it or hate it album...
after "lamb", peter gabriel left to persue a solo career which culminated in his eponimously titled first album, (pg 2,3,4 followed), on leaving in 75 (citation needed), the critics all but wrote off the band untill phil collins took the vacant vocal post...and it was back to business...
next up was "trick of the tail", nothing wrong here, usual tight musicianship, good vocal delivery, good song writing, put the critics in there place..."squonk", assault and battery" and "dance on a volcano", hit the spot...lovely ballad in "ripples", a bit of a first for the band...
"wind and wuthering", pretty much the last "real" genesis album, great songs and touches of old magic, but at this point guitarist steve hackett left to form a band with his brother john...
that wound the band down to three members, phill collins, tony banks(keys) and mike rutherford(bass)...and the rest is for someone else to say...
i loved the gabriel era music, i could even handle the hackett period, but the band went prog lite and later pop/rock... to there credit, they have remained in business while many have crashed on the rocks, but for me the price was a high one...
in summery, id recommend "foxtrot", "selling england" and "lamb" as essential jump points...like these, and a world of similar "neo progressive" awaits you...
happy hunting Jim....
all the best...Laurence...
cheers
