The Ashoken Farewell

Jay Ungar (born November 14, 1946) is an American musician and composer.

"Ashokan Farewell" is a piece of music composed by Jay Ungar in 1982. It was later used as the title theme of the 1990 PBS television miniseries, The Civil War, as well as the 1991 compilation album, Songs of the Civil War.
The piece is a waltz in D Major, written in the style of a Scottish lament. The most famous arrangement of the piece begins with a solo violin, later accompanied by guitar.

In 1984, filmmaker Ken Burns heard "Ashokan Farewell" and was moved by it. He used it in two of his films: The Civil War, which features the original recording by Fiddle Fever in the beginning of the film, and his 1985 documentary Huey Long.

The Civil War drew the most national attention to the song. The song is played 25 times throughout the eleven-hour series, including during the emotional reading of Sullivan Ballou's letter to his wife in the first episode; it underlies almost an hour of film.

Viewers of the The Civil War frequently and erroneously believe the melody is a traditional tune that was played at the time of the Civil War. In fact, it is the only modern composition on the Burns documentary's soundtrack; all other music is authentic 19th century music.

The American Civil War (18611865), also known as the War Between the States and several other names, was a civil war in the United States of America. Eleven Southern slave states declared their secession from the United States and formed the Confederate States of America (the Confederacy). Led by Jefferson Davis, they fought against the United States (the Union), which was supported by all the free states and the five border slave states. Union states were loosely referred to as "the North".

The American Civil War was the deadliest war in American history, resulting in the deaths of 620,000 soldiers and an undetermined number of civilian casualties.

I've seen Celtic Women in concert twice. They brought the house down so to speak. Standing ovation after ovation. The first time I saw them, they did 5 final songs. The standing audience would not stop clapping so they would keep doing another song figuring it would sufice.

This little lady violinist captivated everyone with her high energy music and dance. She is a female version of Charlie Daniels for the high energy fiddle playing. Put the 2 of them together and it would be a sellout show too.

He has a high energy song, "Devil Went Down To Georgia" sor something like that.

Both great violinists. Also throw in Yitzhak Perlman with them. Saw him in person. He also brought down the house so to speak with standing ovation after ovation.

Thanks for posting the tune and a great little lady to play it.

Hi Lillylady! I am pleased you enjoyed this clip. It is not often people comment on any classical music clips I put on here. Thanks for sharing your experience with the live concerts. I would love to see Yitzhak Perlman, and he has a few clips on here, so I may post one or two a bit later. Why don't you post some on this section too?
