Doog1984: Free education promise, never been realized.
Gifted kids don't receive quality treatment under equality. Because most people now getting into university are of mediocre ability and intelligence you have to pull the plug on the idea of society paying for higher education and this has been replaced by a debt-for-all system to finance the pretense and meritless aspiration of all these studying social science or football management etc who should have been down a mine, plastering walls, or wiping arseholes for a living.

Elementary, middle and high school should be free.
College/University must cost some but it should depend on the areas each country needs to develop.
For example, here we need more Engineers than Lawyers but young people keep going to the second but some Engineers’ graduate program do paid the students to be in school and that could be done at the university level as well.

In addition to this it's much cheaper to import someone from the desperate world with a degree than it is to educate our own kids. A clever British millennial who wants to study medicine still has to compete with Indian doctors whose education costs a third of what it does here. The foreigners are a way for older generations to throw younger generations on the scrapheap, with an economy open to all the desperate kids of the earth it turns out that western people don't need their own children anymore.

The best we've done here is to exempt unfashionable key subjects from last round of fee hikes. the worst thing we do is to set ridiculous terms on student loans to lure people into taking them. We set it is so a student doesn't need to pay anything back until their earning £21.000 per annum which acts as a lifelong disincentive to work hard and seek promotion because avoiding these means you'll avoid paying back the debt.
And every student who goes down this route of half-arsed career and unpaid debt is the beating of the butterfly's wings which creates the next financial meltdown.
