It's hard to be yourself

It is true that different people have different characters, but sometimes we want to make some changes in terms of our own characters. Introverted people want to be outgoing and vibrant while the extroverted would like to be steadier and more reserved. I think it is quite understandable and beneficial to make some efforts on absorbing good qualities from other people and discarding bad ones of yourself. Every one of us desires to be perfect, although no one can really realize it at last.

But I found that sometimes we change ourselves not because we want to improve ourselves or perfect ourselves, but because we care too much about what we are in other people's eyes. It seems that these opinions and attitudes are so important that we must live our lives at other people's will. How pathetic! Why can't we just follow our hearts? Why do we have to change our minds to cater to other people's preferences?

Maybe it is because our parents and friends have such a high expectation for us and we don't want to let them down.

Maybe it is because today people are closely related to each other. We are afraid to be isolated from others, so we have to take account of other people's thoughts.

Maybe it is because we’ve become so vain and thus we need those praising words, flattering applause, envious glances to fill our empty hearts, to satisfy our contemptible vanity.

Life is fleeting, I hope that one day we will not be curbed by those worldly criteria and could truly follow our hearts. I hope each one of us could strip off false masks and open our hearts freely.

I hope that one day we can really be ourselves.

What a woman really needs is a good companionship

No matter how much money a man owns, how intelligent he is, or how handsome he looks, what comes down to a woman's true happiness is a good companionship from her man.

Just like a flower needs water to survive, a relationship needs love and care to maintain, most of all, a good companionship. Because without companionship, love is like a flower short of water facing the danger of withering. That's why long distance relationships hardly work, why Zukerberg must spare some time for his fiancee every week however busy he is.

I don't think any woman can be happy with her man who places work over her. In the case when you both have made an arrangement for going to dinner together, the first time he can not make it because he tells you today is one of the most precious days he has to work on, you have no choice but to complain and accept it. The second time he lets you wait an hour to go to a movie together and then tells you he has to rest for a late night work...time and time again, you become frustrated and disappointed since all he thinks in mind seems to be only work. Every time you get upset, he blames you for not understanding his real intentions to work so hard. But for whatever intentions they are, even the most splendid palace he makes for you will just be a cold empty prison without a good companionship from him.

(I wrote this blog only in terms of my opinions, I can't speak for all women)

Stray Animals

This morning I saw one pug lying on his stomach outside our library. His hair was so messy and dirty. As I walked near him and stared at him, he noticed me and stood up immediately, with his big round eyes wide open looking like he was begging for food. I felt very sorry for him since I had no food at that time. As I walked away, my heart was heavy with regrets for not being able to help this dog. I wondered if I should buy a few sausages in case I met these hungry stray dogs again. But there are also many stray dogs and cats on the campus beyond my ability to help. Some are subjected to bad conditions, some are even mistreated by humans.

If people could be responsible for their pets, there wouldn't be so many abandoned animals with no home. But why are there fewer abandoned babies than abandoned pets? Is it because we have laws to protect humans or is it because humans are more valuable than animals or is it because humans have kinships with their babies? But for whatever reasons, animals are also lives and should enjoy some equal rights with humans. If we are not ready to undertake this responsibility to keep an animal pet, we should not raise one. Otherwise, we will leave another poor life suffering.

washing by hand VS. washing machine?

So my American boyfriend told me it would be unimaginable for him to live without a washing machine. He has never washed his clothes by hand and neither have many other Americans nowadays, in his words. This makes me wonder how people in America wash their silky dress or expensive business suit by such a damaging washing machine. Get them dry clean by a laundry service? How about women's bras that contain wires that can be destroyed or deformed by a washing machine? Still dry clean?

As a woman who comes from an oriental country where many people still wash some special clothes themselves by hand, I hope someone can solve this puzzle for me. Thanks!
