S-h-h-hh!(here comes MA again)....

Of course,Ma was an imigrant, from the old country...when she was sixteen-& never dropped the accent."I no gotit accent,I talk goot, vatsamatta for you-you crazy?) She was a quick learner,She even made use out of working in the clothing business,in New York. All of a sudden, she & her new-found friends got raises, when no one else did. Then, somehow she married,& landed in Detroit.Sadly, her husband got killed, working at a flour mill. His cousin came next, she said "in line"(all she had to do is pluck him out)!!She hid his coat, one night, while there was a snow storm....My Pa seemed to learn fast, about Ma,& not to talk rough-he`d get it back.Otherwise, the bottles of home-made booze,(during prohabition),could all be broken up(under the bed) with one swoop of a broom!!!!One day Pa yelled at me,(vatchew doink in my pockets)??I was 5,quickly forgiven, cause he knew how Ma was."Nothing PaPa.Ma said to clean them out".Well, there went his allowance. No tabacco for the week!!! My two sisters provided body heat in our double bed. They had to work to help out,by cleaning more affluent people`s houses.Ma was there to collect that cash ,too. But she did my sisters a favor once in a while, that they could probably do without.Ma couldn`t understand why there had to be only one seam in their nylons, when she stitched the runs, with her peddle sewing machine-they` found it hard to thank her...Before we moved across the street,(which Ma had aquired, deceptively),Pa trudged into the mayor`s office, with us 5 kids in tow, because he couldn`t find work. The depression made things rough. He threatened to leave us there & the mayor would have to care for us,if he didn`t get a job for Pa.Low & behold,he put him to work with the W.P.A. & worked on construction on the roads.(What a fright that was)....So,when we moved into the new house, both my parents kept in touch with their old boarders. Some had money (& Ma knew that). She`d say,"it`s the kids birhday-give her sompthink".(they didn`t know that it wasn`t)They`d hand me $10 or $20.I said, "thank you",& they left. One would bring the accordian (I was taught to dance at a very young age, with change on the floor that Ma kept, too)!Anyway,I figured later the booze came in handy, & they`d loosen up.Before I could say"Oh,boy-I`m rich''-Ma snatched the money out of my hand."You too young to keep dis".We all trusted her & didn`t know why.....If it were up to Pa,we still wouldn`t have a bath tub.I sure never got over, going over my God Mother`s house, with Ma,& myself in tow with a towel,& hearing her say"By the way,can we use your tub tonight"?Then there was the steam bath located over a bar, in Detroit.I thought I`d go blind from what I saw, with all those women around.Saturdays nights,we`d all take a bath in something called a baliya. It was a very huge tub that was warmed on the stove, that took 2 people, to do the lifting. We didn`t even have a table to eat on,there wasn`t room in the small house, but we managed until we moved into that new house. She always got her way, every time. But I forget-what was it,that I learned from her?????!!!!!!
