First Blog Post

So, today is my first blog post.

I am just getting home from work. I am worn out today, didn't sleep much last night and taught an Excel class for beginner's. That was fun! I love to share my knowledge with others and this is a perfect avenue to do that.

The place I work is probably not any diffeent than where others work and the things I face on a daily business are probably not any more than what others face on a daily basis.

However, my job is draining. I am an HIM Director for an ambulatory care clinic. I have four staff who work under me. They are all great, they do their jobs, they take pride in their jobs and they are always willing to learn new skill sets.Of course, I have already said this, but to reiterate, I love to teach. So, I love teaching them and watching them come to understand the material and begin to apply what they learned to their jobs.

Our first in command is our CEO, the second in command is our administrative officer, then respective staffs falls under either the CEO or the admin officer. I fall under the admin officer.

Well, in February, both our CEO and our admin officer left. Our clinical director was asked by our parent company to step in and be the acting ceo, with the official title of acting ceo. He in turn asked me to handle the duties of the admin officer. Notice how I was asked to handle the duties, not step in as acting, no receipt of an official acting title. Just handle the duties.

These duties include supervising 10 departments, some departments are one man/woman positions, however its still 10 departments. This includes approving time, tracking time, assigning duties and monitoring compliance. It also includes representing, to the best of my ability, some of these departments that for whatever reason have been neglected.

I have done all of that. I am not rude to anyone. I help out where I am able and I step in and act the bad guy when my supervisor, the acting ceo, tells me to. There is no letting the power go to my head, as there is no power to be had. Handling the duties and being given an official title with pay raise and all would be power.

What I have is simply a whole lot more work.

So, tell me why it is that so many people have pissed and moaned about this accretion of duties? I am the only person who has both the education and the experince to handle this accretion of duties. The education is paramount to effectively handling all of the administrative needs of the clinic. The education and experience together are critical to understanding laws, regulations, accrediting requirements, finances, budget, HR laws etc.

Now it wouldnt be so bad, but when my supervisor tells me to do something and I do it, then someone complains about my doing it, he doesnt support me, much less tell the complainer that I was acting on his authority. No......instead he says....I dont know why she did that.

Hell I dont even get a thank you.

So what the hell am I breaking my back for? oh wait...thats right..the magic clause.....other duties as assigned.
