Multiple Group One winning mare Eskimo Queen will go under the hammer at June's 2009 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale after being retired today.
Trainer Michael Moroney confirmed the news that the daughter of Shinko King had been retired following her unplaced effort in Saturday's Group One Coolmore Classic.
She won last year's Coolmore Classic, doubling her Group One count after winning the Queensland Oaks as a three-year-old.
"We won a couple of Group Ones with her, but she was one of those unlucky mares who could have won more," Moroney said.
"She probably should have won the Underwood Stakes and who knows what she could have done in the Queensland Derby (when she lost the rider)."
And of course there was the Caulfield Cup when she in great form and was a late scratching in a sensational prelude to the big race in 2007.
The outstanding mare earned her connections $868,650 in Australia and $18,800 in New Zealand from just 21 starts.
Eskimo Queen joins an outstanding line up of mares set to go under the hammer at the Southern Hemisphere's top breeding sale.
Entries are closing soon for the National Sale which will include an outstanding selection of weanlings, yearlings, stallions and racehorses.
The mint julep is well-known as the traditional beverage of the Kentucky Derby, a position it has held since 1938. Each year almost 120,000 juleps are served at Churchill Downs over the two day period of the Kentucky Oaks and the Kentucky Derby. For over 18 years, the Early Times Mint Julep Cocktail has been the designated "official mint julep of the Kentucky Derby".
At the 2006 Kentucky Derby, Churchill Downs served custom-made mint juleps at a cost of $1000 each. The mint juleps were served in gold-plated cups with silver straws, and were made from Woodford Reserve bourbon, mint imported from Ireland, ice from the Bavarian Alps, and sugar from Australia. The proceeds were used to support charitable causes dedicated to retired race horses.
In May 2008, Churchill Downs unveiled the world's largest mint julep glass. Churchill Downs, in conjunction with Early Times, commissioned the Weber Group to fabricate the 6-foot (1.8 m) tall glass (7.5-foot (2.3 m) if the mint sprig is included). The glass was constructed from FDA food-grade acrylic, heated and molded into the shape of an official 2008 Derby glass. It had a capacity of 206 US gallons (780 l; 172 imp gal), and distributed the mint juleps at the Derby with an elaborate pumping system concealed within the "stir straw".

$1,00 per drink!!!!!!! well at least it goes to good cause!!!!
..here unless a horse goes lame or has severe behavourial problems, most go on to breeding/show/pleasure/eventing careers......do they put them down in the states if they arent breeding propositions??????
Charli15695: I'm going to choose to believe that the bbq meat wouldn't be of the equine nature. You're too sweet to animals to do that.... When you win the million...we'll all come for the party!
Actually I am having a cookout after Oaks and another after Derby. I have almost 200 pounds of ribs along with steals, burgers and horse dogs... er... i mean hot dogs. The neighbors are bringing other things and one is bringing a couple gallons of bourbon to make Mint Juleps. We have a blast at our cookouts. Wish you could be here.
Crystalpistol2: The south side St. Patrick's Day parade is cancelled for next year, so get out your guns and go after those PETA people (just joking about the guns)
OMG PETA hates the Irish too?.... When will the hate end?

I was just browsing some thread titles and a thought came to mind...I hope no one shows up with the swine flu.... the crowd at the Oaks makes for tight quarters.
somechick: Oh bummer for me cause I've always wanted to attend the Kentucky Derby but never had the chance. But I won't be able to take a vacation til June.
Now I'm going to go pout.
Everyone I've asked has told me that you should make a reservation 2 or 3 years in advance if you want to be in the Grandstand. I imagine it's easier to get into the infield though. I attended the Preakness in '85 and it was a zoo!

I was told the same thing. i am going to be down on the infield for the Oaks on Friday and I found tickets for the Grandstand for the Derby on Saturday. This is my first for both, so it should be a blast.
zee1ander: Heading to the derby soon... I hope the rain holds off.
I did well at the Oaks yesterday winning almost $3800 when my horse came in and did well on the other races.
I'm sitting in the grandstand today rubbing elbows.... If y'all watch, ya might see me on the Television.... BBQ tonight with friends... might stop in to say hi.
zee
Good luck and have a great time-I'll be haeding to the Hambo in August!
