I was just wondering if anyone on this site is on Second Life ? ( Second Life is a virtual world, where you create an avatar, and interact with others, a bit like a chat room, with out of this world graphics...Check out secondlife.com )

I've been on it for 3 years, and am totally addicted to it..I have made a lot of friends globally, and from a dating point of view, I met my last girlfriend through it, and we were together for a year.

Anyway, I would be interested to know if anyone here is on it, and what your experiences of it are..There doesn't seem to be very many Irish people there, but a huge amount of British and Europeans, and Americans..

For anyone who isn't aware of it, I would strongly recommend checking it out, but please don't blame me when you become addicted, lol..

Oh, and I've heard all the " I have enough problems in my First Life, without having Second Life " jokes, lol.

tallaght_guy: welcome to world of online gaming

It's not really an online game though, tallaght_guy..There is no prize, or tasks, or objectives..

I suppose it could be described as a social networking site..Just imagine this forum, for example, depicted as a bar, and all of us are in it, as physical avatars, looking whatever way we choose to, wearing whatever clothes we want to..we can walk up to eachother, say hi, walk around, get a pint, listen to music, ask Vonney to dance, chat, walk out the door and go to another pub, or a nightclub, or go shopping in a mall, with real shops, and drive home to your Castle in your Aston Martin, lol..

It's possible to open a shop, selling, for example, clothes, and actually make money from it..There is an in-world currency, called the Linden Dollar, which you can buy using your credit card (although the site is totally free, and can be enjoyed without ever spending a penny )..In my case, I own property on it, shops and houses, which I rent out to people, and make a modest income, which pays for my enjoyment of it..Having said that, there is a Chinese girl called Ansche Chung, who has made 3 Million dollars to date from doing the same thing lol.

But fundamentally, it is just great fun..It's not a dating site, it is pure escapism, and for people who enjoy fora, or chat rooms, or just interacting with people from all over the world, its great..

Plus, you could possibly meet the love of your life there, lol..

Well, lancerbora, it's no more hard work than here..And here isn't hard work, lol..For anyone who enjoys online interaction, it's ideal...As Vonney said earlier, it sounds more addictive than here, and it probably is..

But I would say, don't knock it till you try it, lol.

I heard of it recently and the guy who told me about it speaks of it as if he exists in another dimension and has a whole other life and identity.

I definately plan on checking it out.

Thats very odd Ciaran, as I said, I've been on it for 3 years, and never get any mail from them..There are groups on it, which if you join them, you get emails, like newsletters..But certainly secondlife.com don't spam anyone, they don't really need to..

Actually, just checked my mail history now, and the only email I have from second life is the link to activate my account..So I'm a bit suprised at you getting 10 a day from them..Are you sure it's second life you were on..?

I was on it a few years ago too, but as you said, there didn't appear to be much Irish on it, I think thats why I left. It can be a fun & enjoyable place though. Maybe I'll go back someday for a look.

david3800: I agree mcneillm, sometimes it gets very "laggy", especially when so many people are online..Mainly down to the Yanks, so if you can avoid their hours, all the better, lol..

Im actually on it now, first time in a few weeks.

Im usually at home during the day, so maybe when the kids are at school i can spend some time on it.

hmmmm.....Do you need to pay a subscription to use it? I enjoyed 'fiesta' for about a year- it was an online role playing game with manga-style graphics and it was free.

You dont have to, the main advantage in paying monthly is you can buy land, other than that it's prob better off being a freebie person.

You can buy second life currency which will allow you to buy more stuff for your avatar, but there are lots of free stuff around.

If you're curious about it, I'd say give it a try on a free account, then if you decide it's not for you you're not losing out.

Here's the link for anyone interested...

Oh, as for Ciaran's comment about the constant emails, that happens if you get messages when you're offline, there's a setting somewhere where you can turn this off if you want.
