kezza007: Hello Everyone.....

Here for some feedback on my oil consumption problem with my vehicle......

I brought my car from what i thought was a reputable dealer in Feb 2008, it's year of make is 2004, it had 33,000 on the clock and since July that year they have been doing an oil consumption test on my car. The car now only has 61.000 on the clock and it"s just over a year ago I brought the car. Every two months or less it is using from 500ml to 1.5lt being the most to date. .

They now tell me it is burning oil internally and the insurance only covers a $1.000 of it and they will put in $2.000 and i have to come up with $4.000 for them to put in a reconditioned motor in the car as they would not strip it down and find the problem could be more not worth it..

I paided 23.500.00 for this well 18,500.00 plus my trade in made the 23,500.00

I feel ripped off a year and four months later i have to come up with this money, specially seeing not an old car with lots of milage. I feel like going to the current affair shows and putting to them single parents pays good money for car and has to pay this out, in this amout of time after having car.

They come back at me that i broughta used car not a new car and it only had the three months used car warranty. I know this bit is so, but where is good will............

I have had different options as to just trading it in somewhere and put more to a new car.......... But this is my car i made it the way we like, nudge bar tinted windows etc........

I also am up for four new tyres (which i was excepting) about a $1.000

At that ,ileage it should be just about run in, not worn out.

mechanics just rip women off !!! selfish money hungry pricks they are very mad

I took my car for tyres and a service... I get a call from the mechanic telling me the link and castor bushes had gone and needed replacing...

I asked how much.. he said.. one would cost $130 the other would cost $178 and do I want him to go ahead..

I said..

NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I take my car to my friends mechanic... he has a look and says... yep the link bushes need replacing... and it would cost me $90 for him to do it cos he uses spiral bushes not straight ones cos they last longer (don't ask me ?? dunno laugh ) and he couldnt see a problem with the castor bushes at all!!!

Don't let the dealer service it anymore. Find a reputable mechanic and get him to change your oil to a grade more suitable for an engine that's consuming oil. wine

If it's eating the oil (consuming internally) then it depends on how far you go, not how long between services.... but 1500ml for 2522km is definitely excessive.

Give them hell. drinking

There is no set amount that the engine should consume... but it shouldn't be eating more than 1000ml in 3000km.

My commodore has over 180,000 on the clock and it uses about 700-800ml in 3000km.

Running an engine hot or working it hard will increase oil consumption.

makes a note to start keeping an eye on the kilometres in my car so I know when to check the oil but I know I wont

but hang on a minute
'i drive work cars and vans and I have been told numourous times not to worry about checking the oil cos it will be checked at each service (usually 10,000km yeah? dunno )

You should check your oil level regularly.

The sump on a commodore holds about 4000ml of oil... so you can go 10,000km without running out of oil, but I wouldn't drive that far without checking it. uh oh

The rate of consumption depends on a lot of things... even a car that doesn't normally consume excessive amounts of oil might start using more oil if, for example, driven hard in hot weather. An engine might develop a leak and this would deplete the oil too. At a minimum, I would be checking the oil level every 1000km. drinking

Overheating is generally a cooling system issue. Low oil level or old oil can make the engine run a bit hotter than normal as the engine isn't being lubricated as well as it should be... but that shouldn't cause an overheat. It's more likely the other way around, your car is overheating and that's causing the oil consumption to rise.

Your radiator expansion tank might be at the right level... but you can still overheat the engine if the radiator cores are blocked.

Another problem with commodores is the hose between the expansion tank and the radiator can become blocked and if that occurs, the expansion tank will always show the correct level regardless of what's happening in the radiator.

that has happened !! i checked the coolant in the expansion tank and its fine.. i check it in the radiator... its used a tiny amount but not enough to justify the temp gauge rising to midway (it usually sits low on the gauge)but it has gone enoug for me to have to top it up slightly

Take the hose off and blow through it... if you can't, then it's blocked. doh

check the clamps to see if they look coroded. A sign of a possible slow leak.
