Edgar Allen Poe was born in Boston in 1809.
His short tumultous life was marked by poverty illness loss rejection alcohal opium...
His Mother Step-Mother and wife all died from tuberculosis, what he came to call the"red death"He failed at everything he undertook.
Described as a man of keen intellect, given to the darkest of moods which he seemed to seek out.
In 1849 Poe boarded a train in N.Y.,bound for Washington. He got off in Baltimore where he was found wandering the streets in a delerium, dressed in rags with no identification. He was taken to the public hospital where he died.
He is credited with inventing the Detective story but is largely remembered for two monumental works of verse so well known I need not name them. For the last 60 years his anniversury has been marked by the mysterious stranger who leaves roses and brandy on the grave. The media leave him alone lest he stop coming.

Anyone,on Poe?

Used to really love reading Poe. Still have a book with his collected works.

Though I'm sure his addictions to opium had alot to do with things, such as his seemingly dark words.
He was also severely paranoid. Often taking different trains to get to places. Thinking he was followed.

A very dark and mysterious personality is what I imagine when I think of Poe. If caught up in his writings my imagination goes wild, so I tend to stay away from them most of the time. wink

I always wanted to stake out his grave and catch the guy who leaves him roses and Brandy. I bet a lot of people know who it is. Never was there a tale of more woe than that of Lenore and her Edgar Allan POE!

Death hovered over Poe like a Plague similar to the the red death. he battled unresolved grief, lonliness, mental illness, and drug/alcohol addiction. His eccentric nature, which i believe was a result of grief, was apparrent in his works. No doubt if he lived in modern times he would have been the subject of many media stories and headlines. i have read much of his poems and short stories. They all had a connection to loss, grief, guilt, and the returning of the dead. He wrote to express his own grief and his addictions temporarily helped him to handle the pain which enabled him to write. Thanks for your article. i enjoyed reading it. Poe has a museum in Richmond, VA if anyone is interested.

Poe was expelled from West Point, flunked out of the Univ. of Va.and fired several times for drinking on the job.
In his mid-twenties he married his 13 year old first cousin Virginia Clemm. The union was described as idealic, devoted and soul-mated.
Virginia died of consumption at age 20.Being penniless Poe cared for her himself.Of course she is seen as the model for Lenore,Annabel Lee,Ligeia....
Poe never re-married...

Coming up later;
"The Streets of Baltimore"
The Ghost Poem

There are a few photografic portraits of Poe in stark black and white.
He is described as having dark auburn hair and"perfect,Celtic violet grey eyes"
If you look,be careful about the eyes...
