A traditional Zen Story - Is That So?

There was a Zen Master who was very pure, very illumined.

Near the place where he lived there happened to be a food store. The owner of the food store had a beautiful unmarried daughter. One day she was found with child. Her parents flew into a rage. They wanted to know the father, but she would not give them the name. After repeated scolding and harassment, she gave up and told them it was the Zen Master. The parents believed her.

When the child was born they ran to the Zen Master, scolding him with foul tongue, and they left the infant with him. The Zen Master said, “Is that so.” This was his only comment.

He accepted the child. He started nourishing and taking care of the child. By this time his reputation had come to an end, and he was an object of mockery.

Days ran into weeks, weeks into months and months into years. But there is something called conscience in our human life, and the young girl was tortured by her conscience.

One day she finally disclosed to her parents the name of the child’s real father, a man who worked in a fish market. The parents again flew into a rage.

At the same time, sorrow and humiliation tortured the household. They came running to the spiritual Master, begged his pardon, narrated the whole story and then took the child back.”

His only comment: “Is that so.”

I've been reading this story in another forum.

I do like it because a bit of 'IS THAT SO' wouldn't go astray on any of us.

How much of it do you have?

And how much of it do you WANT to have?

I think those who matter in our lives know who and what we are, they don't mind what is being said about us.

Those who want to matter in our lives will try to find out who and what we are and they will not listen to gossip for that.

Those who listen to the gossip and judge us by what they hear don't matter after all, because they don't want to be part of our lives anyway.

Hi.

There is a lot of meaningful lessons we can learn from the Zen stories. They are told so as we can self-reflect, IMO.

One of the lessons i have learned is that people hit out hardest at the part of themselves they see and dislike in others, in some way this makes them feel better about themselves.

True. We recognise the mote in our own eye even though we may not admit it to others. Then we look for fault in others so that we can condemn it without admitting to ourselves that we have the same issues.

Hi Andreawave

Maybe "I spy" is different over there. Here you pick and object in plain sight, and say,"I spy, with my little eye" and give a clue, like the colour, or shape. Then the other person has to guess what it is.grin

petalbabe: Although I respect your interesting post, Jimbo - hi, by the way! - I dont think thats the point of the story. I dont think its a question of doing nothing when there is an injustice. I think its more a point of knowing when to accept and embrace insults and uninciteful and illinformed views comments gracefully, without the need to react to them. Sometimes the fewer words spoken, the more forceful the point..

If one knows - as did the Zen Master in this case - the truth of the case in point, then that is sufficient to one's own wellbeing.

True Enlightenment, which of course is the cornerstone and ultimate goal of Taoism and Zen thinking, only comes from within, and that journey includes acceptance of others' ignorances.

As Sly originally said, a little more of this way of thinking would go a long way...

Exactly, as long as I know the truth, ugly comments and gossip can not hurt me. I rather stand up for someone else than I would for me. Sometimes it's just not worth it.

i kind of see a few points been made in it, it was why i ended my self imposed exile it intrigues me, he takes the word of of the childs family without questioning it, i could not live my live like that i dont like confrontation but i dont repress my natural human instincts for the sake of peace, i just feel that while the message been preached here is in theory wonderful i just dont see it as applicable to the real world its far to submissive, it works well in a group of like minded people but in this dog eat dog world im not so sure

See, anything anyone here can say to or about me is really of no consequence to me. The outcome when I fight back is far worse than the outcome when I say nothing.
If it had consequences to my life, yes, then I surely would open my mouth, but here it's so not worth it.
And I posted this mainly because of the going ons here, nothing else.

i do get what you mean but if we were to use "is that so"
we would be using it as a deterrent to good debate yes it can get heated in here but that is down people letting personality get in the way of good debate there are people here i wouldnt be to fond of but i'd still engage them on the forums that's what there for

I wasn't thinking of using it in a debate.

I like a good honest debate myself.

I was thinking about gossip behind the scene that one gets aware of. This is what in the end ruins the forums, everyone listens and reacts to it, but at the end of the day, it's only gossip, and if one knows the truth about oneself, it doesn't hurt.

well again i would say the only reaction that counts is your own ive had plenty of gossip spread about me in the past week or so and my reaction was to hit back in the end it doesnt bother me if im talked about aslong as its the truth the inly thing worse than been talked about is not been talked about
