Firstly I would defo go with my gut feeling... I would assume I know the loved one (Inside and Out) and would ensure everything was the same the first time I heard the "Problem" and every other time after that....
I think if you have the above you would be sure enough to go with the Loved one!
However if there is any spec of doubt in my mind that it would be untrue etc... I would do the opp....
