JohnnyT: Haha. If i reached the point of multinational i'd be laughing. No. I'm hoping i'll be a director of a successful medium to large Irish company.

You seem like a decent guy too man but we certainly have different value systems. I don't believe industry is all that bad. Of course there are some cowboys in it and they move their assets off shore to avoid tax. But most irish businessmen are decent guys trying to make a living and their employees are a valued asset to tghem and as such will do their best to look after them.
So would I be correct in saying you can offset your expenses when it comes to paying tax and you haven't paid any tax (except VAT which is paid to you anyway, you are only collecting it for the government)

I could offset valid expenses. I haven't yet paid tax nor will i this year as any income i've earned in 2009 will be offset. It cost me money from my own pocket to set up the business. Btw company directors with a proprietry interest don't have the same tax benefits a paye worker has. We lose the paye tax credit and we pay a higher prsi rate even though we get none of the benefits a paye worker would be entitled to such as dental treatment, welfare, etc.

Yep they are indeed. A lot of that is to do with over licensing by the regulator. We've more taxi's in dublin than in manhattan!!

I dont know any public worker who had any inclination to be a rich person, the mjority look on their job as a vocation, going the extra mile, when the need is required not so long ago they were respected, now demonised, tonight on a bad windy night, wet, cold, windy, when we are cosey inside with our families, who are the people working, looking after us all, Im sure there is nothing worse then going to work on a night like tonight, what they get paid I feel they deserve. Maybe changes require addressing but the greed over the last few years have tainted the Irish morale understanding for our day to day heroes, who deal with situations that most will fortunitly never have to even think of, please have some reasonable consideration for our front line workers.

We'll have to agree to disagree. I don't think ethics and capitalism make good bedfellows. Not that my job at the moment is that exhilarating, but I would hope when things pick up a bit to get work in the Community/ Voluntary sector (the third sector, neither public nor private) hopefully some day I'll be able to make a living as a full time writer, but that is fairly distant at the moment.

I work in the public sector and I would have to admit that yes we are overpaid, it's not even up for discussion, its a fact. The premium is actually higher at the lower end of the scale, 30% for those under 35k.

What is your role in the public sector, you are lucky you feel you are overpaid. What wage do you think is a fair onr for your grade?

Well with the firemen being attacked twice last night - and its a regular occurance for them and the paramedics - nobody is paid enough for that IMO.
