RE: Unexplained mysteries

laugh Ah come on now

They would have spent about 7 hours in the van allen belt (it starts at about 8,000 miles above the earths surface btw).

1 hour in the van allen belt is about the same dose of radiation as an x-ray.

All in all I don't think they'd be any worse off than someone that has had 10 to 15 x-rays in their life.

Oh, I worked those figures out without any shielding. Whatever type of shielding they did have would have significantly reduced the radiation dosage. Shielding does not have to be advanced technology. Lead is the most commonly used but any metal will block out an amount of radiation.

RE: rent prices

No it's not just the landlords who keep the rents high. The biggest culprit in this is the tennant who pays the atrificial rent. When this all started in 2008 I asked my landlord in Castleknock to reduce my rent from 1150 to 800. She said no. I moved out to somewhere cheaper and the property was on the market for a year and a half before they filled it.

They had bought that house back in the 90's so her loss on refusing to negotiate was only 10k rather than the 20k in asking price. But still, she lost 10k over it.

Enough people do that to the landlords and you'll have their mindset changed quick enough.

RE: rent prices

Nah, if a landlord boughrt during the madness, then they should cover their losses. That's the risk they took when they bought a 3 bed gaf for 400 - 500 grand.

I think people need to be more principled about this and simply refuse to pay these artificially high rents.

RE: What Do you guys think???

Sounds like a relationship I had. I don't know how many times she "finished" with me and every time if I rose to the bait she would apologise profusely and didn't know what was wrong with her, etc. Insecurity I think.

I would think what is more important here than either your feelings or hers, not that they are unimportant, but the kids. They're gonna be pretty confused by all this coming and going and for their sake, and your own, sounds like you shouldn't go back to her this time.

RE: ireland

Hmmn, well just for clarity...

I pay a hell of a lot more than 30 euro a week. That's me, personally and no financial circumstances would change that. If I've no income for a period, I'll owe it. This will be the likely situation considering I'm now self employed.

But lets just take his mothers income into account.... She is on welfare. She receives the following

1) Standard welfare
2) Single parent allowance (only applicable to one parent regardless of how much time the child spends with the other)
3) Rent allowance
4) Child Benefit

Meanwhile... for the 4 month period I was unemployed... I was on 188 a week. No increase for child. Don't believe in rent allowance. And child benefit is always paid to the mother because of our feministic legal system! grin

RE: cant stand people who...

rolling on the floor laughing only if you can compete with Tesco!

RE: cant stand people who...

laugh I'd probably be very guilty of this crime myself. I'll take food from my mates, I'll rarely offer it... I likes my food.

On the other hand, I will spend money on other people without a second though. Money ain't important. Food is!!!

RE: ireland

Jaysus, I don't know if people on the dole could afford 60 euro a week on maintenance!! Surely maintenance should be cut during periods of unemployment....

While I was unemployed I found it very hard to pay anything to my little mans mother. I did my best and would throw her a hundred, fifty or even two hundred if I had it but at the end of the day I'd to cover his costs 3 days a week, rent to pay, food, car, etc...

Personally speaking.... I kept a record of the amount I owed her. She is sound enough and allowed a little debt forgiveness and I paid her a fairly sizable sum once I got myself sorted. But that's just me personally and I think it'd be unfair to force people on welfare to pay maintenance.

RE: Royal Visit

We should ban all French people visting here too.

Norman bast**ds. Firstly invading the British then continuing that invasion on into Ireland...

laugh

900 years later and we're still harping on about old grudges.

She's the head of state of our closest neighbour. It makes sense she visits.

The security costs of both hers, obamas, prince of monacos and the popes visits this year will likely be more than offset with the boost in tourism created as a result of all these visits in 2011 (the pope visit is just a rumour)

RE: did your last love tear you apart?

She tried to...

Then she realised I am not actually an A4 sheet of paper and let go of my arm grin

But on a serious note, the two woman I have loved I think I'll always love in some small way.

RE: Turning down a job that pays €28k per year

I think she got the idea from the other posts and the fact that people were saying it's ok to turn down a 28k job because of various excuses

RE: Perving !!!!

That is genius beer

RE: Perving !!!!

Nah, it's a form of flattery. And it's useful. I rarely contact girls here any more but there was one quite pretty girl who had viewed me a few times. So I pressumed she was interested, sent her a mail... and hey presto, we have a date!

I'd say the guys that view ye's every day are probably shy and hoping you will make first contact.

RE: table manners

I don't understand what all the fuss is about. Belching, blowing your nose, etc are all just normal bodily functions. To describe bad table manners as repulsive or disgusting is just being pernickety.

RE: Yes or No Game

No, but stole a roadworks sign

Ever played strip poker?

RE: debt

Probably the same company I called. It's a con

It may seem like a manageable paymenmt but it's the length of time the payments go on for to look at and compare that to their overall debt.

Any creditor will accept a debt restructuring plan. They'd be better off working out repayments with their creditors themselves.

RE: why do people send messages

rolling on the floor laughing A for effort

RE: why do people send messages

Ladies, ye gotta realise sending the initial mail is quite hard. There are fairly limited options such as

1. Something funny - potential of looking like a spa
2. Ask a question about their profile - boring and unimaginative
3. Something about themselves - arrogant and self centred
4. Something about the world/life - again, potential to look like a spa
5. Compliments - something a woman always loves but on a site like this, boring and unimaginative

So many guys settle with simple "hi, how are you" mails.

Personally I take the risk and go for one of the above depending on what sense I get from a girls profile.

In retrospect, I don't know if I have ever got a mail from a girl that hasn't been either "hi how are you" or "I really like your profile"

RE: Tales of internet dating disasters.

Yea, I understood the 1000 yard stare after that experience

RE: Some Mothers

That's a fairly crap situation. I'm fairly lucky really when it comes to my kid. His mam is sound enough and decisions are usually made between both of us.

I will say the creche will be good for your kid. It gets children used to socialising before they go to school. I'd much rather he is in a creche now after school but unfortunately we just can't afford childcare. The poor fella spends his afternoons in his mams office, or if not, in my office. No way to spend your childhood but needs must.

RE: conversation and questions

Haha, no not from mailing.

Tbh, there's a lot of trial and error. Out of 10 dates you may only meet 1 person you want to see again. Out of 20 dates you may find a relationship. That's my experience anyway.

A phone call is always good to suss someone out before you meet them.

RE: conversation and questions

Yea ya need to filter out the psycho's. Ask them:

Are you a mentaler?

RE: do you belive in a after life or even a god

But that's what evolution is all about. DNA is randomly altered as a result of interactions with charged particles and the DNA that is altered to provide a better chance of survival, propagates more succesfully than the previous version.

Personally I believe if there is a divine presence, it was very active at the beginning of the universe (as in the first few seconds) and hasn't taken part since. The laws and beauty of physics are so perfect, even down to the imperfections that allow the universe and indeed life, to exist in the first place, it's hard not to believe the big bang had a divine helping hand.

Then again, that could be just our own limited human understanding, trying to make sense of something far bigger than us.

handshake Cheers man

Times like these makes everyone a bit passionate about things. Personally the budget changes sent me on the opening rant cos the tax changes will affect me going back to work. The welfare change doesn't make a difference - I'm so financially screwed 8 euro less a week is a drop in the ocean

RE: Are you going to close your AIB account?

Well if I was going to close it I'd have to pay them back. But I've already stopped using the account anyway cos I'm in overdraft. And after what was announced yesterday.... they are way way down on my list of creditors.

Vincent Browne show

Thank you Paphos. It is a bit risky and there's a good chance I could end up worse off and in serious debt as a result but it's a risk worth taking.

And yes, I may have a different opinion than many, although I'd like to think I've gained that opinion well through some pretty crazy life experiences, but yes it's a bit of a low blow when people get personal even if they do disagree with my opinions.

Vincent Browne show

What a disgusting example of media sensationalist negativity. More tripe about how this budget has hurt the "most vunerable"

A chart on nominal pay rises over a 25 year period was produced by Social Justice Ireland and a Minister grilled about the gaps between Ministers pay and the increase in social welfare over the same period.

Anyone with half a brain - which obviously the Minister didn't have, could work out that in nominal terms over the period in question, ministers pay increased by 50% while welfare increased by 300%.

The people worst affected by the budget are self employed people on a normal income - by that I mean the average industrial wage. Percentage wise the biggest tax increase is there - not that a self employed person was very well off before. Out of everyone in the tax net, a self employed person always payed the highest rate of tax in this ridiculous ultra-socialist, bordering on communist, kip of a country!!!

Social Responsibility

The IMF thread got me thinking about this and the idea that society has an obligation or duty to care for the less well off in society. Certainly morally it is right to look after those in need. We would like to think that society has evolved far beyond the point of say, Spartans, who threw their deformed babies to the mountainside.

But where does it end? It is very easy to see that with the idea of social responsibility in Europe that certain peolple will then take advantage of that, scam the system.

It seems that everyone blames the banks, the developers, the government for the banking crisis. Very few lay blame on those in society who also bought into the madness. Trusting our politicians when they made blatantly stupid statements like Gordon Browns "the world economy is now structured that there will never be another recession". But yet people took it at face value. Believed the hype. Is there no sense of personal responsibility left in Europe?

RE: Will you march?

I know. You generally have a more balanced viewpoint which was why I added the by the way at the end. Others haven't been as ojective as you.

I had quoted you as I wanted to bring up the idea of social responsibility, because while I may not agree with my Polish friend, I completely understand his viewpoint and find it intriguing.
