The best way to manage debt is not to get into it.

I'd avoid them as they loan you the money and charge a very high level of interest, much higher than a bank loan.

If someone is in trouble with a mortgage their bank is the first place to be looking, and perhaps they'll sort out a new repayment plan.

I'm trying hard to decipher your post. The best advice would be to contact MABS the money advice and budgeting service. They have a website with spreadsheet that will help you do a budget.

If there is a lot of debt they will contact you or your friends creditors and come to an affordable arrangement. This is a free service, do not pay a company to do this for you as it is costly and unnecessary.

In fact you don't have to get MABS to do it either you could do it yourself.

Best of luck.

Ps. also try askaboutmoney.com some great advice there.

she and the hubby thought i might know something about it having done some bits in college

so thought someone more knowledgeable than me might know

Sounds like a good way to get into even more debt and in serious trouble with the local mob while you're at it. conversing

Don't know much about it, but what about going to the bank and getting all loans/debts put together and just having 1 repayment over a longer term? Many years ago, my sister did this, which meant she was paying for her car over the term of her mortgage, but it got her out of a hole

Probably the same company I called. It's a con

It may seem like a manageable paymenmt but it's the length of time the payments go on for to look at and compare that to their overall debt.

Any creditor will accept a debt restructuring plan. They'd be better off working out repayments with their creditors themselves.

anniebaby: as far as i know no loans involved they just go to the creditors and try freeze interest and come to an agreement for a payment to b made each month

MABS should be the first port of call for your friend, and, as another poster has already suggested, Askaboutmoney.ie have lots of posts from people in a similar situation.

I would steer clear from any fee-charging debt management / debt restructuring companies. They only serve to escalate the debt spiral.

January is a particularly bad month for most people moneywise ... but it is also the best month of the year to really have a look at your finances and see where you can make changes and cutbacks etc...

Honestly you don't need a company to do this for you. Any individual can do this.

MABS have these letters on their site. Tell your friend to check it out.

Always remember, private debt management companies are in it to make a profit, and I can almost guarantee that if you happen to miss payments with them the small print on the contract will absolutely crucify you.

There are plenty of free services available who at least will point people in the right direction, or give them solid advice on how to prepare monthly budgets. MABS being probably the best know.
