Superstitions. What are they ? Where did they start ?
I tell myself at times that I am not a superstitious person, yet I catch myself avoiding black cats. Where I walk my dog each afternoon there are a few wild cats along the way, and some are black, Yikes ! So lets say a black cat crosses my path. Do I just have to expect that something bad is going to happen ? Is there a time limit, eg. if nothing bad happens in twenty minutes I'm good to go ?? Is there an antidote ??

why are you superstitious of black cats?
i do a lot of work (out of love, not profession) with cats and it breaks my heart to see how many shelters are filled with so many black cats because of a mindless superstition or any other reason. it's like avoiding someone because they're not from the same country as you.
i've had cats all my life and out of all the ones i've had THE BLACK CATS have brought me the best fortune in life.
whatever one's superstition, to quote stevie wonder,
when you believe in things that you don't understand, then you suffer - superstition ain't the way..

Have a great Friday everyone.
Hi Jeepers
That superstition (along with witchcraft) got a lot of cats eradicated in the 1300s

Rats prospered
As did their fleas
And a lot of people died
similarly people get freaked out by bats yet don't realize they're essential in a healthy ecosystem as they are responsible for keeping nasty bugs at bay.

It WAS a healthy ecosystem until we meddle with it

OH no !! Don't get me wrong...I don't dislike black cats, it is just that when I see them, I cringe. I don't let superstition keep me from continuing my transit to the destination. As a matter of fact, the cats I see are stray cats who are being trapped, taken to the vet, spayed and neutered, then returned and set free. The neighborhood even has a feeder set out for them.

On a serious note if I was supersticious I would be contadicting my Atheist stance but know about them. I grew up with certain habits though that were ingrained by socialisation about supersticion. But rationalise and no grounds for people to believe IMHO.

remind me not to follow you. Walking under ladders ?? Do you wear a hard hat ??
Black cats .... it depends where you are from .....
In Great Britain, black cats are a symbol of good luck. The Scottish believe that a strange black cat's arrival to the home signifies prosperity. Furthermore, it is believed that a lady who owns a black cat will have many suitors. However in Western history, black cats have often been looked upon as a symbol of evil omens, specifically being suspected of being the familiars of witches; other cultures also consider them to be bad luck. (Sometimes, other black creatures, such as black dogs, also shared in the prejudice and suspicion of being "familiars"),

I agree. I am not a religious person, so I don't know about that part of it, but agree about how society has mad superstition popular.
i didn't think at all that you don't like black cats, just trying to help you find out why you may be superstitious of them - perhaps i can help you get past that :)
you said that you heard once that they were bad luck if they crossed your path, but, more importantly, do you believe everything you hear?
