wonderworker: Staple foods are fascinating but I'm thinking of ethnic or regional oddities that dont show up on menus and which may be unknown outside the purlieu of our personal experience. I've lived and travelled all over but here's a few from childhood in Appalachia.
Creassie Greens(Upland Cress) Backbones and potatoes(hog vertabrae,boiled) Parsnips(a perennial root,like a nutty turnip) Buttermilk Pie(really)
Ever tried any of these? Or share your own....I'm getting hungry.
Is buttermilk pie anything like a milk tart? These recipes sound neat. You might like the Foxfire books. They have a few recipes and some far out stories about remote people. Really. They're neat. Also the Alice's Restaurant cookbook. Srysly. Also, South African recipes. They make stew and milk pies.
Hi. My computer keeps dropping the net for some reason tonight. My Appalacian neighbors brought over rhubarb pie once. It's neat. My old friend from Harlan County Kentucky where deliverance was set used to fry bologna like bacon. You just cut a plus signin the baloney and fry it. It's not bad.
I'm a vegetarian now. Have been for over 10 years. I love Carne de Soya or soy meat. I found it in the local latin oriented grocery store. You just plump it up with water and cook it into recipes just like meat. It's way better than tofu or Morningstar products, even hough I like them both. I think that's what the Linds McCartney cookbooks were talking about when thyey said to use TVP aka textured vegetable protien. If there are any vegetarians out there, Linda McCartney recipes are harder than usual recipes but they're GOOD.

Thanks Witchay God only knows the things people will eat. Thing is,this stuff is GOOD. I cant really tell rhubarb from apple pie. Granny called her garden rhubarb "Pie plants" Cant anybody come up with something unusual? Like fried pumpkin blossoms? Tastes like fish.
