Your friend asks -

"Do you like my new dress I got for the do on Saturday ?"

You reply -

"No it looks like a sack of spanners"

She shakes you warmly by the throat and you leave. On the way home you can't help thinking that maybe you said the wrong thing, or did yer ......?

There are ways that you could express the same opinion whilst being more diplomatic / less negative / less rude.

for example by replying:

"I prefer the Black dress you wore last time we went out."

Sometimes it's not the message, it's how it's packaged that counts.

Hows about so called white lies in general ?.....

("sorry officer I thought I was doing 29 m.p.h" / "wow, your house looks great since you painted it in orange and green stripes").

I'd tell a white lie by ommission. EG if someone had stinky armpits I wouldn't tell them. Too personal. If they directly asked me if they had BO, my answer would depend on what I thought was best for them and our relationship at the time. Telling some people about this would just undermine their confidence.

I see you're not taurean, unlike me ... I'd say 'hell bro, is that some new age lifestyle thing you're trying?' and laughlaugh

That's a good approach. How the other person would feel about it might depend on the tone of voice and type of laugh. If done in a good naturedly having fun kind of way that's great. If done in a sarcastic taking the piss type of way then that's not the way to win friends.

But then thinking about this subject, we all have different ways of expressing ourselves. There's no right or wrong answer. If you feel most comfortable telling white lies then that's fine. If you prefer to be more brutally honest, that's fine too.

I agree .. there is no right way to look at this .. sometimes brutal white lies do indeed seem easier and therefore better than the simple honest truth.

I would rather be told so that I could then do something about it myself tho.

I guess I think that even at the cost of sadness, it's better to be wise than a fool - but like you say it's different for each person .. and if 'winning' friends is your priority in life, it could possibly maybe perhaps be better to not offer the opportunity to take corrective steps to later avoid embarrassment.. I'm not really sure about that either tho .. beer

I once spent a couple of days painting my sister's house as a favour, her partner provided all the stuff and the theme was to be black & white, he said he'd leave the combination to me so I did the front door and stone windowsills in lovely dalmation style spots in time for him arriving home from work, (good laugh and was easily painted over the next day).

In another life and timezone when I worked in a mostly female environment, on two occasions (a few years in between), we had one of the girls compliment a customer on how nice she looked as an expectant mum, same reply both times....." I'm not pregnant".
