"Not all who ask where is your accent from build walls."

True, but it's the way the say it, that gives it away. Also, they way as soon as they can establish the difference, all conversations ceases, and they never talk to you again. (Like, in a work situation, training class, whatevera.)

Experience chalked up, you soon can tell which people 'saying it that way' are on their way to catorizing you as 'not one of them'. (Followed by total avoidance thereafter.)

The ones who have asked me (dozens and dozens if not hundreds of times) "Where dya come from? When are ya goin back?" (those words exactly, quoted verbatum, every time!) are kinda easy to read.

The questions being fired at me in a LOUD, DESPERATE, FEVERISH voice are usually a major clue of what's to come...

There's always the usual (tediously similar) conversation...

"WHERE do ya come from???? WHEN ya goin BACK????"

---Well, I'm from here originally...but I've (travelled/did some schooling abroad/adopted this accent for the duration of filming a movie I'm working on/like doing accents for fun/wanted to see what would happen if I sounded like this/always wanted someone to ask me that question) [delete as necessary].
Why do you ask?

"Well, I'm only asking!!!" [The all-exonerating statement of the obvious. Gives anyone license to do whatever they want, apparently].

(Yes, I know you were 'asking'. I know what a question is; I speak fluent English. You're stating the obvous. Do you also yell at Police "I'm Only Stealing this car!!!"...? "Well, I'm only picking someone's pocket!!")

then there's the
"WHERE is your ACCENT FROM????"

---Well I'm from here, but I've travelled (was brainwashed into speaking like this?/I like faking accents?/etc...)

which gets answer with:

"YOU SOUND LIKE YOU'RE FROM [GUAM/TIMBUKTU/BORNEO/ALPHA CENTURAI] !!!"

---...Then why did you ask where my accent was from? (Obviously not a detective in the making...)

Then there the 'dead to rights' guy:

"WHERE IS YOUR ACCENT FROM?!?!????? - ORIGINALLY!!!!"

(Spotlights from overhead helicopters shine on you when this question is asked...don't bother trying to run...you're painted into a corner in a dead end alley, like you're trapped in a bad made-for-tv-movie...on the run...with nowhere to hide...they've got you surrounded...)

You are special!
(Meanwhile, I'm somewhere between 'special needs' and 'special education'!)
Go ahead, say it in a cheery, high pitched squeeky voice:"I'm SPE-cial!"

Of course, there are some people who'll accept you as you are...no matter what the voice sounds like, they're more concerned with the thoughts in your head.
(including my good friends: some of whom are Scottish, some of whom are from various international places; all of whom 'accept me for me', and they know that's I'd end up being me no matter where I've been living...or which accent I've spoken with before, now or will speak with next).

For every two people that 'switch off' to foriegn accents, there's one that doesn't...(but it's the quality, and not quantity, that counts!)

Anyway....you wouldn't think that any of this would be an issue in such an international city such as Edinburgh...(or in such a big city as Glasgow).

So...meanwhile...onto other subjects...
