First to win an Oscar in a lead role, the lady who played the maid in Gone with the wind won for best supporting actress as did Loius Gossett for An officer and gentleman.

Freshstart74: The art of telling the story has been lost in movies. Star names, special effects budgets that could save even Irelands national deficit, loud soundtracks all are common place. In many ways cinema has lost the key to all those great movies from years ago.

If you only watch big Hollywood movies then yes...but there are lots of independent films and world cinema out there that are very good. Hollywood has not been making stories since about 1982.

Sunshine Clearing, Little Miss Sunshine or Rachel's Getting Married are good examples of films made recently that have a well told story.

Hollywood can do the occasional good blockbuster (Christopher Nolan has not made a bad movie yet) but I'd stick to the indies for the meaningful stuff. Shame not that many people will watch a subtitled film too.

The Three Colours Trilogy are some of my favourite films. Then Cinema Paradiso, Malena, Amelie, One Deadly Summer, La Reine Margot...so many classics out there
