How do you feel about immigrants to your country in general?

Do you welcome them?
Are you suspicious of them?
Do you think immigration levels should be curbed?
Do you think that new immigrants should "assimilate" completely?

An example..

Recently, I stayed in a hotel complex that had been owned for generations by a local family apparently, until a couple of years ago.

It was then taken over by a foreign family, who already owned several other properties in the area.

The general consensus of local opinion seemed to be one of slight resentment, because it seemed that these properties/businesses were simply being milked for all available profits, not being maintained to the full extent that they should be and generally just being run with only the minimum of care.

The profits from these businesses are apparently being sent overseas to the owners' families, rather than being ploughed back into the business and/or local economy. There seems to be a history of businesses being bought, squeezed dry and then dumped. Is this beneficial to anyone apart from the family involved, if the profits from these enterprises are not - at least in part - put back into the local economy?

How do you feel about this? Do you feel that if you immigrate to another country your first priority should be your overseas family, or the well-being of the area you have moved to? Or both?

I have a lot of Albanian friends here...most are immigrants, and some have even married here.
I have no qualms at all...they work and support themselves...i find them a fantastic bonus to the community.

That said I do believe they need to curb the levels in Britain. We are over maxed with incoming immigrants who believe in a better way of life here. And they would be right as we accommodate to all.

Its a sad story really...because decent people are looked down at by others due to the rising intake and the hostility it has caused in Britain.

thumbs up Good topic xwave

Having lived in London for 4 years in the late eighties and early ninties, I saw a multi cultural society for the first time and liked it. Ireland has that now and for my part i think its great, and as the Irish were welcomed in so many countries i think it only right to accept others here. Not all feel the same, for the better part the under educated and ignorant complain about their jobs been taken by these people... that said these irish wouldn't work in a fit.

The more we integrate many cultures the more we understand each other and therefore the less we should have to fight over.

Hi B..

I have noticed that the Irish are becoming much more xenophobic in recent times, due to the financial climate. The resentment toward immigrants seems to be growing, and it is mainly amongst the younger generation, from what Ive seen, heard and read on the Irish Forum.

Quite worrying, really.
