Guys, incase you're not aware, our great incompetent government in conjunction with a few junkies have succeeded in making certain pain killers like solphadine and Nurofen Plus available by prescription only leaving us with asprin which causes your stomache to bleed, paracetamol which damages your liver and basic ibuprophen which is no damned use without the codeine.

So now you have to give your doc €50 and your pharmacist a prescription charge for a toothache.

Just to let you know that you can buy all these tablets from Amazon.co.uk by post which will save ye a trip over the border.conversing

The numbers of people addicted to O.T.C medicines in Ireland has risen sharply over the last few years. These medicines are mainly Codeine based and are meant for use on no more than three consecutive days because of their habit forming properties. People addicted to such medicines range from all across the socio-economic scale
From August 1st 2010 all medicines with the ingredient Codeine will have to be kept out of public view in pharmacies and while not going as far as to be made prescription only, it will be at the phamacist's descretion whether they can be so...ld to particular people and there's talk of pharmacies keeping a register of customer habits.
The products include, Solpadeine, Nurofen-Plus, Migraleve, Veganin, Syndol, Feminax, Panadeine and cough medicines such as Codinex.
There are many people out there who have problems with these medicines but think it's ok because they're Over The Counter drugs. There is help out there but I think more people need to be made aware of the problem and seek help

Big brother is at it again. Pretty soon we'll be told we can only drink a certain brand of coffee, or use a certain colour toilet roll.

Why should the majority, who are intelligent, sensible, reasonable people have to suffer because SOME people have addiction issues.

This is purely a money making racket. They introduce prescription fees and in less than a year make the most effective and popular every day painkillers prescription medication? Really?

Hmm allergic to the stuff, might make life easier for me now that its hidden. . . I remember as a kid a GP just halving a dose of a cough bottle he had earlier prescribed . . . . after been sent for when I had a reaction! Hadnt a clue! Gave up taking anything as I had a few reactions to different things. Only found out a few years ago what was causing it.

it's not going on prescription though but just has to be kept out of public view.
I know a few intelligent professional people who have a 24+ a day Solpadeine addiction. People are too eager to take these remedies for minor headaches and the like instead of the one ingredient option. Of course Codeine has it's place but just shouldn't be used willy nilly for minor ailments

I've heard of 3 people between yesterday and today being told by pharmacists that they are prescription only. Can't find anything to confirm this on relevant websites but it seems a bit strange that people are being told this if it's not true.

At the end of the day.... It's not my fault if some people get addicted to things.

Some people drive dangerously... does that mean cars should be banned?

Some people are allergic to peanuts... does that mean peanuts should be banned?

Some people get hay fever... does that mean grass and flowers should be banned?

It's time people took responsibility for themselves. Everybody should not have to pay the price for the bad decisions or bad luck of a few.

I must have been wrongly informed that precription was mandatory. However, there are more addicted to alcohol in the country, yet they reduced the price and made it more accessable! Beats me!

Pharmaceutical Society Of Ireland Guidelines

The guidance includes the following key points:
• Non-prescription medicinal products containing codeine should be
stored in a retail pharmacy business (pharmacy), out of the view of the
public, to facilitate the legislative requirement that these products must not
be accessible to the public for self-selection.
• Non-prescription ‘combination’ products, containing codeine and
paracetamol, aspirin or ibuprofen, should be supplied only as ‘second line’
products for the treatment of pain relief, when single ingredient products,
such as paracetamol, aspirin or ibuprofen, have not shown to be effective.
• Non-prescription medicinal products containing codeine should only be
used in accordance with the terms of their marketing authorisations, which
all state that the product be used for short-term use, no longer than three
days.
• Patients need to be fully advised of the correct use of these products
and the risks associated with their misuse. It is also essential that patients
be facilitated in obtaining medical assistance for any health problems related
to their misuse that may arise.

I work in a retail pharmacy myself and we have been giving out printed warnings with all Codeine sales over the last few weeks. Yes there is a place for Codeine but only when used responsibly.
It has been banned in the US for years and they're quite happy to make do with Advil lol

Then there will be no change. There will be plenty pharmacists quite happy to pick up cutomers who have been refused elsewhere! I personally have a high pain threshold so it has to be fairly acute before I take anything so I go straight for the nurofen plus when I do need something. As someone else said, this is nanny state stuff!

It's also putting a hell of a lot of responsibility on the shoulders of the pharmacist. If you ask me it's going to be impossible to police.
As for the Nurofen-Plus GG you must have a great digestive system because I would be sick for a week after taking them.

I generally just take one or two panadol... except when my three (ouch!) slipped discs play up and then I will get a prescription for Ponstan Forte. Never got the whole Neurofen Plus thing myself - I have a few friends who pop them like smarties confused

It must be down to your system. The nurofen plus makes me a bit sleepy too and ensures I'm not awake with pain all night.
