I always love the story from the journalist in "Once we were Soldiers"...

he was asked about his grandParents and said they met cos their Fathers used to go to the same shoe shop in the small town every year on the same day ..Both had lost a leg during the American civil war and fought on different sides ..His Great grandapa on his mothers side had the left shoe and the Great grandfather from the Fathers side the right shoe

Its such a funny story i suspect there might be some truth in it conversing

I think that's a fab idea...there's so many family stories that die with the older generation and they should be told and carried on down the family tree thumbs up

On the night of the 1901 census all of my great-great grandparents, great grandparents, and grandparents (on both sides) were within 10 minutes walk of O'Connell Bridge, although on opposite sides of the Liffey.

My mother's parents lived within 50 yards of each other, and were once put in the same pram. They grew up alongside each other.

My father's parents met when he crashed his messenger boy pushbike into a tree on his first day in the job, and her mother came out to help him. He was sacked, but got another job (for life) in Dunlops. Their wedding, held in their various family rooms in Marlborough St., went on for a week as it was during the Black and Tans, and the guests kept missing the curfew.

My parents met at a dance in Clerys, making my mother warn me for years 'never marry a man who's a good dancer' dunno (I didn't laugh) Then they married and moved out to Finglas. They lasted over 50 years till my Dad died in 2007.

I know this sounds like something from Strumpet City, but it's brought up a load of lovely memories for me.

Ahhh C, you wouldn't believe the memories this thread has brought up for me... I had the yappiest Granny on this planet... very closely followed by my Auntie.... gives me a great sense of grounding knowing all the old stories... but even better being able to verify all the names and places in the 1901 and 1911 census online . One of the success stories for technology heart1 teddybear
