Get your facts straight...so you know S. Harper did not send our troops to war. The previous Liberal government put our troops in Afganistan.
The only thing that seems to have changed of late is the mission has have become more bloody with combat and less focus on peacepeaking and rebuilding the nation. But how can you peace keep and rebuild if The Taliban and insurgents keep responding.

War doesn't know heros ... on war there is nothing heroic at all!!!
That is just cheap propaganda ... war is simply an insane bloody mess!!
I never have talked to a soldier of ww2 who said something about 'honor'.

right....let's all feed the Taliban and with appetites sated they will all raise a glass and lay down their arms...

Would that it were that easy, spidermoose.

Witness - as but one small example - the unrest in Somalia in the early 90's: corrupt warlords battling for power and seizing humanitarian aid food shipments under the noses of the UN.

It is a simple fact that military intervention will always be needed to assist those that cannot defend themselves from corrupt and unjust regimes.

but the word 'hero' is allways used in context with "soldiers",
the resistens in germany comes to close to what we call "terrorists" today ... they who deserve the honor don't get em!

If the countries they send soldiers now to stop the war might better of stop to sell weapons to them ... the american gouvernment is the biggest arms dealer in the world ... and now those poor guys who die on both sides are paying someone else bill!

The german resistans was fighting THEIR OWN gouvernment because it brought war all over the world ... that's a big differents

No, it's not always used in context with any group in my opinion. I'll agree the word is tossed around lightly at times, like calling a sports figure a hero, but in context of all the men and women who died to defend our Nation, and others, they are certainly due the respect and the title of hero.

I won't argue that there are many heroes who go unrecognized while others are almost deified for no legitimate reason, but when speaking of Canadian soldiers in the context of WWII as you mentioned anything short of the word hero rubs me the wrong way to say the least.

Start a thread recogninzing who you think is heroic and ask others for their suggestions as well if you so choose but please don't dismiss the heroism or honour of these men and women based on something else.

I guess that's my .02, maybe even nickels' worth.
