Here in Argentina it's known as "Día de la raza". Many people native defenders are in disagreement about it should be a celebration. They claim it is a day to remember but there is nothing to celebrate because they considerate it was a real invasion. In fact the notion that Columbus was responsible for more calamity and destruction than progress and prosperity is widely assumed by many people here. Despite the oppositions next Monday will be holiday in Argentina (it will be one day in advance for touristic reasons). How it will be celebrated in your country and what the fuss would be about it(if there is any)?

we don't celebrate it. In fact, while a major economic player, Columbus actually was the confirmed second Euro to come to North America as the Norse were certainly in Canada well before him and possibly, the Chinese,Polinesians and even rumored that Egyptians were here prior to him as well.
He certainly did blaze an economic trail though. Lots of hooppala and such but really, few discoveries.

Shrugg off your colonial past . Its not the day of discovery, Its the day the destruction began. Columbus or all those explorers did not discover anything in Latin America or India . We already had a very develpoed civilization before Vaso De Gama came here. They only destroyed what was there , your language, customs and culture all fell .Its good if you shut down your country an mourn to mark his arrival there

Well…yeah. But keep in mind it was just another link in the chain of the history. Romans did the same with Arabians, Arabians did the same with Spaniards, Spaniards did the same with native Americans… and so on. I mean… it was just what conquerors did wherever they went and whoever they were.
