I suppose that we have no choice....again...to take what the government throws at us. I am an auld wan I actually remember a time when kids did not get x boxes etc. for Christmas. I grew up in a rural area where everyone was poor, so luckily there was no stigma attached. Neighbours helped each other etc. You did not have to pay the kid down the road up to 30 euro a night to babysit, it was what you did for a neighbour.. Do you think that we are going to have to go back to that? I think that maybe it is no harm if we all have to go back to times when we actually did things for each other...sense of community etc. Dont get me wrong, I am pissed off that the budget is putting all of us and some more than others in such a horrible situation. I am just wondering if we all as a community can pull together and go back to the old ways of helping each other out for no financial gain?? Not a recommendation, just a question...are we capable of giving to each other?
I hope your right, I think that we were all to busy keeping up with the Jones's to realize that Mrs. Kavanagh down the end of the road hasn't had a friendly face call round for a cuppa in years

Well I'm not an aul one Nor are you But I was certainly raised this way! I used to mind the kids down the road as their Mum had minded me when I was young - that's the way it was where I grew up anyways! Of course, it too was the place where if you needed a cup or sugar or a tea bag, you could just go next door, let yourself in the backdoor and borrow a bit of what you needed - nope, not a reference to stealing - just a neighbourly thing - when my Mom was ill, or in hospital which was alot of the time - it was a common occurance to come home and find a dinner (a stew, roast, anything) warming in the oven. We weren't a rich family from a well-to-do neighbourhood - but everyone helped with what they could when they could. When I was growing up there - very few, if any locked their backdoors. It was a wonderful way to grow up and certainly had quite an impact on how I grew up and try to live today.
So I completely agree with your post - hopefully despite all the strain put on us all by the 'powers' that be - we can rally despite it all and band together and make the best of the worst!
A wonderful post that I was glad to read this morning! Well done !!
