Salvador Dali -- What's the Deal? (57)

Oct 1, 2006 11:59 AM CST Salvador Dali -- What's the Deal?
In my conversations with some of the ladies on this site, one man I keep seeing reference to is Dali.

I have a superficial understanding of his paintings, and have seen a couple films he was involved with, and realize he ran with quite the circle of friends for a good amount of time, and of course I've tripped over something he has said on numerous occassions. I've also done a small amount of digging over the years to try sneaking a glimpse of what made the man tick, to little avail of course.

What I'm wondering is ... what's the deal with women being drawn to Dali?

I'd also accept any male input on the man, but it's gonna be almost off topic to my query laugh

As always I appreciate your opinions, rants, telling me to sod off, or just the usual hijacking of my threads grin

Think outside the box...

I never found he was more popular with women. He has become part or the popular culture, and like Escher, became known to people other than the ones who actually studied and appreciated art because of his creative genius.

Adversity breeds creativity. He was also a product of his time.

I'm not questioning his talent or that it's viewed by both genders. I have been under the impression that these ladies were more than appreciating his talents. They seemed almost drwan to him as a moth to the flame so to speak.

Maybe they just haven't discovered any other artists. They need to broaden their horizons.

I am fairly certain they are well travelled, well read and versed in the arts and culture.

Freud's experiences were not too scientific..has brought perhaps some great theories and reasonings but... the core experiences were not too scientific.

Now I can definitly see a link... and must say I am now curious to find out more.

Dali can be dismissed as eccentric at first glance but quite intriguing on further study. I barely glanced at his paintings as a student in art history but I enjoy his work now.

The melting watches in Persistence of Time tie into Einstein's theory about time: i.e. - that it is relative, not fixed or linear.

I love his painting of the cruxifixion. Very powerful.

The more vivid and violent my dreams, the more I envy his talent for capturing such imagery.

Aha! There the kind of response I was seeking!

"The more vivid and violent my dreams, the more I envy his talent for capturing such imagery."

That makes sense to me, you can connect with it on some level??

Regarding Persitstence of Memory (I'm assuming that's what you meant) I can't help but think about the Camembert when I see it on a postcard or something similar grin

Yes I know until she died she was his spouse. for money she once made him sign blank canvases which she sold for $ 1000.00 each. As his mind degenerated into his paranoid mode in which he painted his best work.

After she died he did hook up with a much younger woman who took care of him quite well I am lead to believe. He is buried in the center of an art gallery of his works.

Throughout his life there were many who influenced him, but ultimately he was simply - and excrutiatingly - surreal.

Ok, so now the ball's rolling grin

What does selling his canvas's have to do with anything?

Some would argue that his earlier works were better than Purgatory and the likes.

I don't believe it was proven that he was forced to sign blank canvases.

You've arousing my interest in reading further. I admit I don't have your in-depth knowledge of Dali... I just know what has attracted me and why I can be entranced...

It wasn't me that said his canvas's were being sold. That came as news to me. I just don't see the relevance of it happening (whether it happened or not) to his works.

Marcus seems to have a better historical knowledge than I by far.

I'd love for him to explain how this is releveant to The Divine Comedy. Yes, I'm assuming that's what he was referring to with the remarks about Dali's later works.

Feel free to jump in and corect me Marcus grin

And for what's it's worth Jonquille, why women are drawn to Dali was the reason I posted, so you have answered better than Marcus or I could at any length of debate.
