I'd never really thought of myself as a woman who is drawn to Dali- I would however say that I would fall inlove with Monet or Manet, and Degas. I'm more into impressionism than surrealism.

I do think however, that we should all plan a day at the art gallery- so we can really talk about this... (great thread- shame it wouldn't have survived in the international forum though)

I'm waiting for the thread to die off totally before I add more to stir it up again grin

I've always been drawn to the mind behind the work, almost as much or more than the actual work itself, leaning me more towards a Dali or Picasso. I'm not very familiar with Manet at all, but can certainly appreciate your impression (no pun intended) of Monet or Degas.

The original question could still be answered seeing as how you say you would fall for one of those three men, or in my terms, are drawn to them.

Care to fill us in? grin

I shouldn't have forgotten Renoir...

But I see the love of women behind the brush strokes- no matter how abstract the painting- the female form is always a beautiful shapely one. The women in these paintings are everyday women, in cafés or in parks, some are elite, but most are "paysannes" (I forget the English word for that...). I think their minds must have been beautiful, their spirits somewhat wild, and their love intense. I'd have given my (insert appendage here) to have known any one of these men- or better yet, to have had my portrait painted by one of them!

lol I will...

Please though, if you're thinking about checking out Renoir- you might see what I mean if you google "Bather on a Rock" (1892). She's one of the most beautiful women I've ever seen...

I try to google artforms as little as necessary. So much is lost without texture or lighting and 'feel'. And yes I'm aware there are likely many pieces I will never be able to view, life's too short. I like to at least be able to see a print or something other than a digital. I will definitely be looking for a way to get a peek, I think I know the piece but am not etirely positive, just assuming I know it based on the name of the work.

he did a whole series of Bathers, some more detailed than others, but this one...it has always captured the emotion, the power of the female form...for me it's a fabulous piece. I have seen the prints.

Oh, and in checking out the AGO site a few months ago for an upcoming date, I noticed that there's an exhibit of Emily Carr's work coming up. She's a totally unrelated artist, but growing up, I learned so much about her. One of the true, great Canadian women...

OK, fine .... I looked crying

It was the one I thought too, damn. Lovely piece but I can't help but feel I'm missing so much about it as I look at it generated in front of me by 1's and 0's and a combination of rigid, harsh Reds Greens and Blues.

Af for Emily, one of the true, and one of the many grin

Here's a comment from the mind behind the work:

"I believe that the moment is near when by a procedure of active paranoiac thought, it will be possible to systematize confusion and contribute to the total discrediting of the world of reality."

He also once said painting was only a minute part of who he was, and that he woke every morning with the great satisfaction of knowing he was Salvador Dali.

What if we could each face the day with the satisfaction of being who we are - instead of being restless and wanting something more or something else? hug

Well, I'm good with who I am, and what I have. Sure, I'd like someone to share that with, but I don't think it takes away from it?

As you said.

I'm very drawn actually to naive art. In Atlantic Canada we have some great ones and some of these artists are close friends of mine.

Kicked our butts out of the victorian age. Thanks Salvador.
"Outside of the box" yes, while it is apre paux, it dosen't even begin to cover it. The man decided that "whatever it is, whatever it could be, whatever it wants to be" just isn't good enough. Lets tip the scales and be completely different. He is as close as we will ever get to appreciateing a paradigm shift in our own lifetimes as it will ever come, even those for most of us it was 50 years ago. Many artists had to die to become recognized, he saw a fleeting glimpse of it in his own time. He was able to see that he was realized.

Odd certainly, forward thinking, thats for you to judge, controversial, certainly...the guy is just cool, odd, but cool.

Aria, I think you meant native art, not naive art. And yes, native art from Canada is collected all over the world, highly prized for its individuality. Most particularily the art of the first nations from B.C.

I'm new so I'm not sure we are allowed to post links without big brother, but just use your google to research sali. Look for a faithful reproduction of clocks, mindbending conceptualization considering its time.

Salvador Dali is/was a very famous artist. His work changed the way that people looked at art in his day, and still today. L.
