Watching Sky News I am appalled at the coverage of the dreadful events in Japan. The trouble is, that the broadcaster is clearly simply passing on things said in his earpiece...he has no knowledge of anything relating to geological events and an audience which also has no knowledge, will believe him.

For example, he has said that because of the convergence of 3 tectonic plates, Japan has had earthquakes 'for a long time'. What he means is...forever! (geologically speaking of course).

He hhasalso said in recent moments that there has been a report that there 'MIGHT' be a leak at the nuclear reactor that has been causing problems due to water cooling levels.

Sky have already backed off from the original 'There will be 10metre high waves from the tsunami' news taht they were putting out earlier.

Sorry for going on...the first question is.....Is 24 news coverage doing us any favours, or is it just creating an immediate problem by speculating without checking facts first?

The other thing is that within 10 minutes, there is a 'Helpline' telephone number. What is the real point of this? Who is going to call it and for what purpose? Do I call and say my Dad is in Japan....is he OK? Is this a case of doing something to convince the audience that something is being done....but in fact, it is a meaningless gesture?

So Question 2....Are Helplines a help or a hindrance?.......

In the meantime, Japan is in a desperate state and we all wish them well.......

There is a market for people who want to watch 24 hour news coverage. Some people like myself dip in to find out what is happening in the world, others watch it for fun and must nejoy it. my point however is this as with Newspapers they are biased and have their own opinions and individula agendas. nyou do not have to buy a newspaper and you do not have to watch the channels. reading around on the web and looking at differing news outlets alows you to make your own mindup. at the end of the day you can always turn the TV over or off.

Thanks Tomcat.....

I'm not worried about me...I think I can make my own opinions. It's the influence that this sort of coverage extends across teh rst of the population....(you excluded of course!).

I am watching it as I write...the pictures are being recylced with ever more (almost) histrionic reporting.

They had an expert on saying that there was no time to issue tsunami warnings to mainland Japan...the reported that despite warnings, people were driving along oblivious of the water that was about to engulf them...

I hope you seewhat I am trying to get at....

In the middle of this chaos, they can't report objectively....there are no 'FACTS'...

facts mean very little to people Ray, Fox News is banned from Canada, because they lie and admit it. maybe the brits should ban sky news but its entertaining at times and adam boulton is joy to watch even if it is obviuos he is biased. (look up his interview with alsitair capmbell during llast years election campain on you tube ).

In a disaster such as japan or the reporting in lybia the facts do not exist i feel until a couple of monthss afterwards. at the moment all is in flux. Channel four news on in the background is reporting the same as SkyN. that the reactor is close to melt down other channels such as al jazeera alos stated this a couple of hours back. as i said Ray we have to wait and see .thumbs up

Yes they are speculating but I don't think speculation will cause a problem because so many other stations will be covering this too and not all the info will be "speculation", secondly, the helpline is for people with friends or relatives in Japan tht might be worried and may be able to find out good or bad news about said friends... Just my oppinion.

Sailfree...I am sure we all agree with that. The numbers are beginning to assume massive proportions especially for the village that was washed away.
