U.S. President Barack Obama, under pressure from Republicans and the public, announced on Saturday, the new measures that will increase domestic oil production and reduce gasoline prices. It is mainly for the sale of new licenses for exploration in Alaska and
in the Gulf of Mexico.
National Petroleum Reserve in Alaska is the area counting 23 million acres (about 9 million hectares), originally designated in 1923, the source of oil for the U.S. Army. Located in the northwestern part of Alaska near the Arctic National Park, Wildlife refuge (Arctic National Wildlife Refuge), which the administration of George W. Bush wanted to make available for use against the objections of environmentalists.
my question what is more important ecology or cheap gasoline ?

I think we can have both. It's just a matter of doing it right. From what I've seen, the work done to make oil companies behave responsibly has succeeded in getting them to develop ways to drill and transport the stuff without causing a huge mess.
There will always be some change in the environment when any creature moves through it, and we have to choose and accept and cope with those changes as we go. Choosing NOT to work for lower energy costs might feel more righteous to some, but it wont result in a better ecological conditions, since we will do things to cope with higher costs that might be as bad, pr worse than the occasional oil spill.
Not to mention too, that since oil IS a "natural" thing, the fact that there's some making a "mess" somewhere only means that it has moved from one LOCATION to another.

What we need to want, as humans, is that the environment that results from what we do, be an environment that is good for us in the long run. That is not the same as wanting to have NO effect on the environment: there IS no way to do that, since even if we all kill ourselves, it will make a mess.

I oppose letting ONE segment of our society profit from, and enjoy themselves, at the recognized expense of another, but there IS no way to cause NO change.
