The thing that makes us different from all other living creatures is that we are able to think in abstract terms. This creates many problems because we tend to create things that lead to destruction as well as good things that lead to morals and ethics for life and preservation. I believe the use of ethics and morals is to rationalize our existance and is the genesis of all religions.

There is no doubt it is a contributing factor and many in the field fight for an ideal, but the King, Caesar, Tsar, Emperor, etc. often used this zeal to gain material wealth. As Islam expanded after 622, did the Sultans and the Emirs only wish to spread the word of Muhammed, or were they looking to the wealth of Constatinople? Were all the Crusaders wishing to bring the Christian faith back to the Holy Lands, or were some there to further territory under their control?
The answer, as always, lies somewhere in the middle, in my view.
