Last Wednesday I went into the hospital for what I thought would only take a few hours. In preparation for surgery to be done sometime this summer, I needed to have an evacuative lumbar puncture done.

Anyone familiar with lumbar punctures knows that they are no fun.
With no anesthetic, they stick a long needle directly into your spinal column to extract cerebro-spinal fluid.

In my case they needed to extract a lot.

I had an LP done a few years ago so I knew pretty much what to expect.
Or so I thought.

On wednesday afternoon they tried 4 times but couldn't get any fluid.

On thursday they tried 10 times but still no fluid.

On friday they failed another 4 times and finally succeeded on the 5th try.

So I had 19 long needles stuck into my spine, always hurting like you would expect of such a procedure. But in addition, often hitting nerves and sending taser-like pain down into my legs.

Boy was I glad when they finally got it right.

My sister was my brothers T cell match. We drove into Pasadena to the City of Hope, what a great hospital.
She signed several stacks of medical stuff and at the end of each stack the resident would ask for just a little more blood for their data banks.
After fifteen small tubes she was done, she thought, as the testing continued the resident ran up to her and stated, she needed more tubes because, mislabeled, lost, dropped.
My sister Briana passed three months later and my brother lives on.

I didn't go through the horrorible experience that you went through but I did have a bad experience. I needed surgery but they didn't want to give me general. So instead of a general they tried to give me a local in my back. They tried four times and couldn't get it right. By the fifth time the guy hit a nerve and I jumped about a foot off the table and said "I'm leaving". I swear, that's what I said. The doctor said let's try just one more time and that was the time that worked.

Since then no matter how small the surgery is I demand a general except for one time that my surgery was on my foot and they put the needle in my foot AFTER they put me to sleep.

Not fun at all.

No difficulty, she knew it be our last time together.
She also loved my brother and said if it was the last thing she did in life, it was her honor.hug

Wow, that's weird because 2 girls were pacing me down a hall in college and talking about having to be stuck over and over for a blood test.
