saoirse65: Ah..the book that I have not read...
I tend towards believing that nurture has the bigger part...Adoptive parents for example may take a newborn and raise him/her with all good and positive values...can that not over ride innate traits?

You really need to read that book laugh Are you still afraid ?

Yeah I believe it can override those traits to some extent, but we can't change the inner essence of people totally. Its JMO.

jimbo79: i think it all depends, beat one child and he/she grows up to be an abusive person beat it's sibling and they grow up to be calm and reasoned , two kids grow up with alcoholics as parents one turns out the same the other never touches a drop, both obviously affected by their upbringing but take differing paths because their nature is different so their reading of the nurturing received differs

u make a good point therethumbs up

fitandfun79: The person makes the person... your surroundings will have some impact on the type of person you are.. whether it is a poor or affluent lifestyle you were born into.. but at the end of the day, we all have the option to choose left or right, up or down, in any given situation

The Person makes the Person...but what makes the Person???
I am still leaning towards Nurture over Nature??
I am not asking about lifestyle or being affluent etc. I am talking about personal traits, personality, how we treat others?

Twins reared apart

In 1979, Thomas Bouchard began to study twins who were separated at birth and reared in different families. He found that an identical twin reared away from his or her co-twin seems to have about an equal chance of being similar to the co-twin in terms of personality, interests, and attitudes as one who has been reared with his or her co-twin. This leads to the conclusion that the similarities between twins are due to genes, not environment, since the differences between twins reared apart must be due totally to the environment.

Some light reading for you laugh

I think we will all have differing opinions on this as to the percentage of influence either one has. Greater minds than ours cant work it out.

Hi Vinny wave

Sorry, I was in the middle of a reply to you early when I got side tracked. I never thought of the twins scenario, but I still believe it is more the environment we are exposed to, our teachings and peers that shape who we are and the path we take

The same values may have been instilled in them by their parents, but there are other factors to consider too.....friends, teachers etc. Aswell as that, being the youngest of 4 girls, I know the parenting changes as you go down the line, the core factors are the same, but there would be natural changes, due to circumstances

Well I believe nurture has a part to play all right but I think when are brought into the world, we are different, so people who are raised the same way or very similar ways will react differently. Thats where the geneaology comes in. Its an interesting subject.

Interesting video
