vinny1967: I meant to quote Uno with his hurling quote

It's definitely something to be proud of. Used to play it but I prefer the soccer as I find it more tactical.
as my father often says to me " there is more excitement in a junior hurling match in ten minutes then there is in 90 mins of most professional soccer matches" laugh

sofarsogood74: It depend where you live. There was a huge buzz in Dublin about the Euros. Flags and bunting all over the place. It was great to see. And it also depends what pubs you drink in. Rugby is still considered a posh sport by most working class people in Dublin. The pubs I drink in would show football when 6 nations games are on and may have the Rugby on a little TV in the back.

Outside Dublin GAA was always bigger than Football. Rugby would have been close so I would have to disagree. Football is as popular as ever in Dublin. I can't talk about the rest of the country though. But Dublin was always the centre of Football support anyway.
i am talking more about the floating fan, but you are right in what you say

vinny1967: Taken from Wiki

Gaelic football is the most popular sport in Ireland in terms of match attendance, and in 2003 accounted for 34% of total sports attendances at events in the Republic of Ireland, followed by hurling at 23%, soccer at 16% and rugby at 8%, and Initiative's ViewerTrack study measuring 2005 sports audiences showed the sport's highest-profile match, the All-Ireland Football Final, to be the most watched event of the nation's sporting year. Soccer is the most played team sport in Ireland. Swimming, golf, aerobics, cycling, Gaelic football and billiards/snooker are the other sporting activities with the highest levels of playing participation in the Republic of Ireland
both rugby and soccers figures would be inflated there by internationals though at a local level that would be different

mcattack: Well Gaelic football (don't know why it's called football when you can pass from one end of the pitch to the other and score with your hands) is the most popular sport in this country...
or you can kick it, it's called football because you kick with your foot

It is figures based on attendance in answer to a question about popularity of a sport.
I would reckon Rugby is higher now after the success of the last 8/9 years that teams have had.

My point is you don't have to kick it with your foot, you can pass it all the way from one end of the pitch to the other..and score.. without using your foot..apart from running of course laugh

mcattack: Na i really don't think so mate, i know for a fact that i wouldn't go to the rugby world cup because i couldn't be arsed and talking to other fans about scrum halves etc. just wouldn't appeal to me...there are a lot of families that go to GAA matches, mothers that haven't a clue etc. and i know a lot my mates who go to Kildare games just for the piss up in Quinns or the Red Parrot...keeping to the point though, that just shows that it's a popular sport, i bet your football mates wouldn't be going to a an Irish cricket world cup and most wouldn't go to the rugby either....

Here's an example, there's a GAA club in Kildare and it shows all the "soccer" games aswell as GAA, when the two are on at the same time there are much more people watching the "soccer" than the GAA matches..i think that says a lot
would it be like that for a kildare game?

no not the cricket though i have been myself i really like it as a game i would go to a few rugby games too, and used to go to see shels in the soccer years ago

but there are floating sports fans, i think you would be mistaken assuming they are soccer fans totally. these are the thousands that go to big championships and yes even rugby, 20 year ago rugby was very much so a minority now everyone thinks their an expert on it.

here is counter example carlow out in the championship last year soccer game abandoned as the lads were going to the match

all my point was really that people don't have to be major fans to go to events that goes for the gaa too, lets just enjoy the occasions

well the keeper still has to kick it out a free has to be kicked as does a sideline, you have to solo the ball

No not a Kildare game, but i don't see why any GAA fan would prefer to watch a "soccer" game than any GAA game?? It kind of says that unless your county are playing then i'd rather watch "soccer"...which is a bit strange in my mind!!

Ah yeah we know they don't have to be major fans but the majority are and had been waiting a long 10 years to go to that championship..

Come on Jimbo, i used to play it, i know the craic laugh

It was just an observation, if the keeper catches a shot then he can hand pass it out and the rest of the team can do the same and then score without kicking the ball at all..that's not football!!

Football should be played on the ground to feet, tackled with your feet and all the skill should be in your foot..like REAL football tongue
