on a convo on the radio the other day someone suggested for Ireland to have a united football/soccer team and in a way it would make sense, more players to choose from so that Ireland could become more competitive on the international scene, it works with the rugby and other sports so why not with football? dunno

opinions? conversing

And sing Irelands Call?? a song that has no meaning whatsoever...plus do you really think that shower in Windsor Park would have anything to do with the Republic of Ireland?? one half of the stadium would be singing Irish songs and the other singing English songs...it'll never happen and i'm happy enough with that!!

I think it might if you give both sets of fans free Beer on the condition that they don't chant that slogan "You'll never beat the Irish". It just brings bad luck.

Can't see it happening for a long time Baldy to be honest although I would like to see it.

The FAI (Republic association) would be more up for it I think but they have benn a very corrupt organisation down the years and would want to ensure their benefits are not diluted.
The IFA (N Ireland association) have shown themselves to be extremely bigoted down the years and would need a complete change of mindset.

Would love it to happen but I fear its a long way away if ever.

VinnyI think the movers and shakers in both camps will continue to draw big salary's while either's future participation in major events will decrease. When you see a team from 32 counties you will know things have really moved on!

When Ireland became a Free State the IFA was still in charge of football for the whole island. The FAI was only formed after the IFA started discriminating against teams from the South.
Teams from the 6 counties said they did not want to travle into the free state so both legs of cup competition and certain leage games were ordered by the IFA to be played in the North.

Obviously Southern teams got pissed off with this so they split with the IFA and formed the FAI.

And that discrimination is still there in the IFA and would have to be overcome if it was to ever happen. One of the reasons I don't think it will happen for a very long time.
