a44dreamer: I'm not sure about other countries but Cyprus Red Cross will only accept new items. I'm always sceptical about giving money etc because you hear of situations where the aid doesn't get through to the victims, charities taking a large % or polictical barriers preventing them getting through.
Lorca is in Spain so hopefully should be back on its feet quite quickly. Those who will be affected are the ones who don't have buildings insurance.

thumbs up There are other groups of persons (different than Red Cross or other International Organisations) with different rules about the items. Of course I would never give a pair of old socks but small groups can control the minimum quality of the clothes, for example, as be clean and not worn out.
These groups may focus on one place, for example a small remote village, so that nobody is left without help.

hoolet: I live in the western world, which has different standards from the third world. Doesn´t mean to say I don´t have compassion for those who are born in a less fortunate environment than me. I can do very little about their plight, but would donate what I could.
However, we were talking about those in dire circumstances, i.e. earthquakes or floods. This is taken care of by our famous care takers, i.e. Red Cross, etc. to which I donate, what more do you want??????
This person has denigrated the goodness in me, which I find offensive.

Instead of doing it over and over again and having them incurring the expense of shipping a used heavy appliance like a refrigerator halfway around the world that probably won't work if and when it ever gets there long after the emergency is over, why not just donate money like most people do?

doh

In the previous church I went to, there was a guy who worked at World Relief(?) in Tacoma, Washington. They specialized in medical needs, like hospital beds, etc. They would wait until they could fill a whole semi trailer, then they would ship it overseas. The shipping cost was $15,000 per container. Sadly, the guy I knew died, and his wife was on oxygen that she had to carry around everywhere.

By making a thread on a public forum and opening it up to discussion make it everyone's business.

cloud747: I never said i donated a fridge..

"""look..i donated my fridgem blankets, everything,,"""
