The purpose of the sanctions is to place pressure on the Iranian regime to adhere to UNSC resolutions regarding it's nuclear program. As part of these resolutions Iran is to allow access to prove they are not enriching weapons grade material.

The sanctions do not include food or stapes despite some uninformed cries rather, they target material the regime needs to acquire military goods and the funding that it uses to do so.

While the opinion of many is that only the people will suffer in reality, the options to do anything else are limited to war or allow Iran to acquire a nuclear weapon contrary to the world's wishes which, of course, as we all know Iran signed onto when it became a member of the United Nations and, when it signed the Nuclear Non Proliferation Treaty.

So, scrap the Non Proliferation Treaty, Allow Iran to have a bomb, wage war via attacking all of it's facilities or, put pressure on the regime via sanctions and the civil unrest that will occur.

Those are the options and, all of them can be rectified, just as Saddam and his non compliance could have been - with an order to adhere to the conditions of those resolutions and ceasefire conditions. To blame the west for something Iran is doing wrong is typical bizzaro world logic but, some do for uninformed reasons it seems.

And lo, another uninformed poster gives his uninformed version of reality without proof of course;

uninformed poster: All embargos are nothing less than a group of States basically agreeing to murder the ordinary citizens of another State that refuses to kow-tow to the others demands. As food stuffs always end up on the lists the result is for many , be they children or the aged, the deprivations will cause their health to suffer and many will die.

Reality =

Nope, no baby food there. No food and no medicine. If Iran needs money they only have to adhere to the agreements they signed onto.

An agreement. Definition of an agreement is;

"" a : harmony of opinion, action, or character : concord
b : the act or fact of agreeing
2
a : an arrangement as to a course of action
b : compact, treaty
3
a : a contract duly executed and legally binding
b : the language or instrument embodying such a contract ""

So, any person with the opinion that Iran does not have to agree with anything must also take consideration of the fact that this new agreement can take other forms such as not allowing Iran to have nuclear capability in any way or even trade much less exist with the present regime. Iran agreed with the regime in place to certain things and the world they supported acknowledged their word. Should we now view them as an illegal government with all agreements void?
