With this issue, I feel our great Canadian passivity once again rears it's ugly head. As a Roman Catholic person, I celebrate Christmas...not "seasonal greetings". I realize the Christian faith is in the majority, of Canadians who practice a religion. I am certainly of the belief that all faiths should have equal rights in our country. Why though must the Christian feast of Christmas dilute it's title in order not to offend other faiths. I have no problem with other people of other faiths celebrating their feast days, as is, by their proper names, ie: Ramadan, Yom Kippur, etc.

Is it because Christmas has become a secular holiday in this country? Im guessing this is the case. Id like to hear what other's opinions are on this subject. dunno

I am not a christian so keep that in mind as I post please.

Isn't the change from Merry Christmas to Season's Greetings only a change in a secular sense to begin with? The advertising industry is where Season's Greetings seems to have replaced the term Merry Christmas.

If you want to call December 25th Christmas and pass well wishes along to others using Merry Christmas no one is stopping you. I would however have thought that the terms we use would be meaningless to a Christian compared to the magnitude of the holiday regardless.

I am fairly certain no one is saying Season's Greetings as you enter a mass on Christmas day.

I may have read your questions intent improperly, but to me your question was secular to begin with.

Hi Spagooch,

You raise a good point. I too am Roman Catholic. I would agree with you that Christmas has become a secular holiday in Canada.

I am really dreading this Christmas. Now that my only child lives a life completely separate from me - I am facing my first Christmas - alone. I have "done" all of the other holidays on my own, at least once. However, Christmas is the one that is "killing me". There is so much "hype" in the Church and in society at large about Christmas. I don't know how to just make it "another day". I'm open to suggestions.

Regards,

Lorraine.

Hi Lorraine,
i am sorry to hear you will be alone. Maybe you could get together with some friends this Christmas that live in town?

Hi Darren,

Thanks for your response. I don't have friends in the community in which I live. People that I know "gravitate" to "family" on Christmas day. Yesterday, I was at the hairdresser's. My hairdresser is on his own this Christmas due to the break up of his marriage. One of the local Chinese food places is advertising in the local paper that they will be open on Christmas Day. So - I asked my hairdresser if he would like to go with me for Chinese food on Christmas Day - and he said "no thanks". So - I'm feeling a bit like the "loser who tried". There has got to be other single people in the area who are facing Christmas alone!

Regards,

Lorraine.

PS. I like the new "fun" picture of you! I wish that I had a web camera. I look so much better than the photo of me on this site - even if I do have to say so myself! L.

Hi Darren,

I have a scanner - I just don't know how to use it!!! If my "estranged daughter" would come home - she could/would show me how to operate it. I realize that it can't be that difficult. Thanks for the input.

Regards,

Lorraine.

It wasn't so much a question but an inquiry as to what others opinions about this point might be. Im not debating whether it is right or wrong, we are after all, a secular society.

I understand and appreciate your bringing up this point. I would suggest that you greet your friends for Christmas the way you always have, and those folks that you don't really know or don't wish to offend by saying the wrong greetings, just say have a safe and enjoyable holiday. It is well known that it will also be Christmas and Boxing day, followed by New Year, so you go ahead and celebrate it exactly the way you feel comfortable. If some of the other folks are busy celebrating differently, just think of it this way, if you belong to their culture or their family you would be doing the exact same thing. Don't worry man, this is all a learning experience for every one. When you get some free time, stop by the library or the bookstore and browze the sections of books on culture and festivities. You will be surprise at what you learn. Remember to do things your way, and the safe way, during the holidays.

I know this is a touchy subject, but I am with you on this one. I don't want to tip toe though the holidays hoping I won't offend someone by saying Merry Christmas. It is a most joyous time in the Christian Calendar 2nd to Easter. We should not be embarssed to celebrate our faith.

Lorraine.. as for somthing to do on Christmas day.. try volunteering at a soup kitchen that day. Not only will you be giving the community a beautiful gift of your time, the Christian faith is built on giving of ourselves to others...just a thought..

My favourite sentiment is simply "Peace, love and joy". It's not seasonal.

I find it grating and hypocritical to hear glad tidings at Christmas from people who are unpleasant, spiteful, vindictive or bad-tempered all year long.

Compared to "Felice Navidad" or "Joyeux Noel" the phrase "Merry Christmas" almost seems trite, considering how profound the Nativity is to those of Christian faith.

I agree with the comment that Christmas should retain its name, just as the feast days of other religions do. Go with what is in your heart, not with the trend towards the secular. I personally wouldn't take offense at a warm and heartfelt "Merry Christmas" no matter what my beliefs.
