New Mexico police put a man in the county jail and forgot about him being there for 22 months.

I don't think he'll be fretting about it for too long.

He is now 15 million dollars richer then the day they put him there.

How could this happen? It's a county jail.

Might be worth going to jail for 22 months if 15 million is at the end of the time.

From the news I have been reading - he has a lot to worry about - his health - also as is usual the department will appeal to lower the amount - which is usual in these cases.

Compensation may include pay for the caused damage, but also be punitive, to prevent recurrence of such cases.

I can't find another explanation of the amount of $ 15.000.000.

I know his health is bad Jean. I think they knew he was there but intentionally ignored him. Why would they do that for a DWI?

I honestly believe he has a case. In a civilised country, you can't just lock someone up and forget about him. It's a sad indictment that nobody missed him. Can you imagine losing 2 years of your life removed from all humanity and those you love feeling impotent and powerless to do anything. This really is not as funny as it appears on the surface. He'll need years of counselling for this.conversing

from what I read - and from my experience in working in the criminal justice system for a few of my early years - it can and does happen -

the scenario - person gets booked in jail - system creates a date defendnt is to appear in court - gets assigned a lawyer or hires one. He gets put into isolation perhaps on suicide watch. He should still have hearings, doctors see him, so does the correction staff - he has to be accounted for, several times a day...... somehow, he does not get a future date set for the courts.... and I don't know what happened in the initial court hearing to set bond.... this is where the department lost control and perhaps why they are now apologizing and were penalized with the $15 million - because it was an egregious mistake.
