It seems every ad for something to buy has the magic numbers 99 in it. Have you ever noticed all of the ads in all forms of the media has 99 at the end of the price? When you watch T.V. every info-commercial uses this ploy and now almost everything has it. It is even on houses and vehicles. Does the magic 99 numbers make you think you have to have it? Does rounding off to the dollar make a product any less attractive?
Yes, it does sound cheaper to our brains and at one time it was only on cheaply made items, but now it seems to on expensive items also. I am surprised that no religious sect has pick up on it and started preaching it as the work of the devil, since most of the bigger items have three nines mentioned in the price.
That's precisely it. And that's why, at one time, anyway, and maybe even now, Wal-Mart's pricing never used to end with .99, it was always .98 ...or less. Their way of beating the competition...and it worked. "We will not be undersold" and they meant it, too.
