Cable tv is one of the many technological advances of recent times. I know that excists now even in remote places. But there is a feature which IMO, looks very argentinean and it's the following:
Here it's already usual (something like an open secret) that the cable company employees, offer to their customers their services to carry out clandestine connections that obviously should be kept secret, for a sum of money which goes completely to their pockets.
In addition, it is very common too, that a neighbor is the legal owner of the connection, but in fact shares this connection with another/other neighbors illegally. Or more directly that a neighbor who is non subscribed makes a furtive conection.
My question then is: does this kind of thing happen in your country or city, or we Argentines are a unique case of widespread corruption?

it happens here too...I've actually known cable workers to hook up certain peoples cable without them paying a dime...but it's not per se sharing with a neighbor....but I think it happens in all areas, electric, gas water and so on...it's a matter of who you know or how much you'll fork under the table IMO

Sorry Monte...maybe it's language barrier or I'm just too silly getting ironies, but I'm not sure what you mean.

And for Sooner Gal, yeah...cable tv was just a example but it's happening here too with other services for sure.
Glad to know that we are not as exclusive as I thought

Not your fault that you didn't understand what I said

The lilly white glove thing was implying that our cable companies would never mumbling break the law

I've never seen it happen or been offered free cable but I have no doubt that it happens

Thank you for the explanation. Now I get it.
My English knowledge have been throught text books and therefore I lack of the popular nuances of the language. blushing

Monte, this happens here too, in the U.S, but it's not as common as it used to be. I've had a neighbor or two in the past who climbed the pole, and piggy backed the connection of another neighbor. It's quite easy to do this in an apartment settings also, where no pole climbing is necessary.

Supposedly, there are sever penalties if you get caught, but I've never heard of it actually happening! If the company finds out - they simply undo the connection.

Haven't heard of that happening here in my area of Grosbeck but it's obvious I'd never know it.

Well, that might be the explanation of why there is more illegal cases with the cable than with other services.
If someone is caught for committing any illegal connection to electric power, they'll apply a heavy fine that must be paid to continue supplying the service, since it is unthinkable lacking of electric power. On the other hand if they cut off the supply of cable, they are not that service and that's all.
