No European Democracy has the perfect way to handele Islam

Even before the latest attacks, it was clear that the leading governments of Europe faced broadly the same dilemma. Within the large and growing Muslim communities which every European state now hosts, a minority is attracted by the cause of violent extremism, at home or abroad. The challenge is to keep that minority small and make sure that the rest of society, including the rising generation of Muslims, plays its part in this.

But in their approaches to this problem, European states have always had differences, often robust ones. At least in pre-9/11 days, French security chiefs used to refer scathingly to "Londonistan" because of the British capital's willingness to harbour Islamist opponents of secular regimes, like the one which usurped power in Algeria.

There are differences of ideology as well as practice. Like America, only a bit more so, the French republic has a specific set of founding principles and it expects all citizens to accept them, however diverse they may be in other respects. It is agreed that one of the purposes of universal education is to inculcate those ideals. That is in sharp contrast with the British ideal of multiculturalism. To French eyes, it seems that Britain has been too lax in allowing immigrant sub-cultures, like the Asian Muslim enclaves of northern England. The existence of British schools (whether private or within the state system) where the ethos is that of ultra-conservative Islam can seem astonishing to observers from France, or from other European states where education is more centralised.

Britain now acknowledges that multiculturalism has gone too far, especially in education, but in a country that lacks a written constitution, there is uncertainty over what common denominator citizens and schoolchildren should be asked to accept. Whatever answer is found, it will not as demanding as the French approach. In Britain, the decade-old French law that bars headscarves from schools seems like an infringement of liberty. When Jack Straw, the former foreign secretary, said he preferred Muslim visitors to his office not to wear full face-veils, he was denounced as grossly insensitive by fellow Labour politicians. That sentiment is still widespread.

Not only is each European country different, each one is changing at a different pace and in a different direction. In contrast with secular France, post-war Germany has always had a lot of religious education, Protestant and Catholic, in its school system. Now there is increasing provision for Islam; what will happen after the arrival of more than a million refugees, mostly Muslim, is anybody's guess. The Netherlands used to be generously multicultural but a sharp reaction set in after the murder of Theo van Gogh, a film-maker, by a Muslim fanatic in 2004, and the effects are still palpable.

The hard truth is that no European country has found the ideal balance between accepting diversity (which is the natural impulse of a liberal democratic state) and demanding adherence to a common set of values. That is because no perfect balance exists.

France has done its collective best to offer Muslim citizens a hard secularist bargain: accept the ideals of the republic, which include the religious neutrality of the state, and you will be as free to practice your religion as any Catholic, Protestant or Jew. It has more-or-less successfully imposed that bargain on the organisations which speak for Islam in France. But inevitably, there are those who reject it. For the great majority of French citizens of Muslim heritage, the republic's offer is probably acceptable. But if only 1% of young French Muslims radically reject it that is easily enough to provide terrorist movements with ample recruits.

EQ,, thanks a lot,, as of now, i could hear from my end that those who were able to escape starts relating their experiences, though it is horrible to listen, but it's a good sign that some did tackled the shock, while others maybe were not able, and we could understnd them.

It's so sad that this thing happened,, but the possitive thing to it is that,, the EU and the international opinions were made to realize that adequate solutions should be reached so we could once again live free from fears in our respective country. We just hope they could could come out with a unilateral agreement this time.

The world could no longer deny the danger that we're facing,, visions should change.sad flower sad flower wave

As what i have learned,, there were 2 passports that were recovered
with the bodies of the two of the terrorists, one said to be a Syrian and the other one is Egyptian,, the rest are said to be french citizens, some are residing in Belgium.

France has done a big error in it's interior policy regarding the matter. Education is somehow a part to be blamed, it surely would require quite a time to reverse the mentality. A lot of things should be put into questions.

I also read they were supposed to be fake passports.
Either way directly after the attacks lots of crazy reporting going on and people were latching on to anything.
The truth about their identities will come out.

From The Telegraph site Babette

All terrorists were EU citizens - EU chief
Matthew Holehouse writes: Federica Mogherini, the EU's chief diplomat, says that all the attackers are so far believed to be EU citizens. She speaks after a meeting of EU foreign ministers.
"Let me underline, the profile of the terrorists so far identified tells us this is an internal threat," said the High Representative. She notes the external EU border is an issue regarding returning jihadis. But she adds: "It is all EU citizens so far. This can change with the hours, but so far it is quite clear it is an issue of internal domestic security."
Her comments may be part of a pre-emptive effort to help defend Schengen in the coming weeks.

It is possible that there may have been refugee involvement Babette but I sincerely hope not. The people who perpetrated these horrific attacks are the type of people the overwhelming maority of refugees are trying to get away from.

Could that be an inside job?

Most people believe what the media says and they do not question if that is true or just a cover up.

Here we have had a rather suspicious explosion of an aircraft that was carrying a strong political candidate and what a convenient situation that he is gone and only his ID was recovered. Not a shoe, not a nail but his ID in case there is any doubt.

Talking specifically about the Paris attacks there are just victims who have no side.
But in this conflict I would agree, lots of victims unfortunately and people trying to profit from the void.

Victims are victims and you are very right "they have no side" Vinny and if people keep spreading the hate there will be more victims rather that to look for the cause of it not the effects.

Who were the terrorists?

Up to 20 involved in attack

With seven suicide bombers dead, seven others under arrest and one man on the run, 15 men have so far been linked to the Paris attacks.

But Belgian intelligence officials have suggested that up to 20 people may have been part of the terrorist cell that planned the attacks, meaning a total of six people could be on the run.

'Ahmad Al Mohammad' - died in suicide bomb at Stade de France

The real name of the suicide bomber apparently carrying a fake Syrian passport when he detonated at the Stade de France remains a mystery, but officials say he entered Europe as an asylum seeker less than two months earlier.

The counterfeit document bearing the name 'Ahmad al Mohammad' was found alongside the body, whose fingerprints match a man using the name to enter Greece in early October.

Federica Mogherini, the EU's chief diplomat, said all the attackers are believed to be EU citizens, however, raising the possibility the man was using the fake passport to re-enter Europe, possibly because his real identity was on a watch list.

The discovery has raised fears other militants may have used the migrant crisis to pose as refugees and enter Europe among crowds making their way from Greece through the Balkans to Western Europe.

Greek authorities say the passport was used by an asylum seeker who registered on the island of Leros on October 3 after his makeshift boat from Turkey carrying around 70 migrants foundered off the coast and he was picked up by Greek coastguards.

He then reportedly applied for asylum in Serbia before travelling on to Croatia, Hungary, Austria, Germany and eventually to France.

Fresh fears ISIS is using refugee crisis to smuggle into Europe as Turkish police arrest eight suspects are caught with hand-written migration routes

Turkish police have detained eight suspected members of ISIS who were planning to sneak into Europe posing as refugees, state media said today.

Counter-terror police detained the suspects in Istanbul's Ataturk Airport after they flew in from the Moroccan city of Casablanca on Tuesday, the official Anatolia news agency reported.

The police found a hand-written note on one of the suspects detailing a migration route from Istanbul to Germany via Greece, Serbia and Hungary, including smuggler boats across the Mediterranean Sea, as well as several train and bus journeys.

It comes just a day after it was revealed eight migrants have reached the EU using passports identical to the fake one found on one of the Paris suicide bombers.

The eight men told police that they were just tourists who had been planning to spend a few days in Istanbul and had booked rooms at a hotel, but no reservations were found under their names.

18.11.2015.

Turkish football fans booed and shouted “Allahu Akbar” during a minute’s silence for the victims of the Paris terror attacks, during which 132 people died at the hands of Islamist Jihadists.

The silence was held before a friendly game between the Turkish national team and Greece on Tuesday night in Istanbul. There are long standing historical tensions between the two rival nations, and it was the first time the two teams had met for eight years.

Fans in the 17,000 strong sell-out crowd began jeering and shouting as soon the collective gesture of respect and morning for the victims and refection on the horrors that befell France began.

As well as “Allahu Akbar” — Arabic for “god is great” — spectators also chanted, “the martyrs are immortal, the fatherland indivisible”, a popular slogan used by nationalists against the Kurdish, but also one which appears to imply sympathy for the dead ISIS terrorists and suicide bombers.

Speaking after the game, the Turkish manager Fatih Terim suggested that fans at the Basaksehir Fatih Terim Stadium should have been more respectful.

“Our fans should have behaved during the national anthems and during the one minute silence,” he said, adding: “Greece is our neighbour. Today is world neighbours day, but our fans didn’t behave like neighbours in this match.”

The Turkish Football Federation had announced a string of additional security measures before the match following the attack on France’s Stade de France on Friday and last night’s cancellation of the Germany Netherlands game because of a bomb scare.
