You pulled up to a gas pump, and got out to pump gas. Your kids are strapped in thier car seats in the back of the car. Something "tells" you to open your hood and check out you car before you pump your gas. When you do, you notice smoke coming from your engine. When you open your hood..... your engine is on fire! So the thought races through your head that your kids are in a car..... get them out and run! But you're at a gas station, parked next to a gas pump with a burning car.
Initial reaction would be to grab them and run inside the building. Those buildings are designed to take explosions, and they have emergency gas shutoffs for such an occurance as well as systems to control the fire until such time as the fire department gets there.
I got the kids out and ran while I was calling 911..... but that was a situation that I could not imagine ever happening. Thank God it was put out by the fire department before it got too bad. I think I was trauamtized after that
You calmly unbuckle the kids from their seats and take them and yourself out of harms way.
The engine is NOT going to blow the car up or the gas pumps either. It will more than likely burn itself out if the ignition is off....which it should be if you are going to pump gas.
Someone can call for help to put out the fire (if it's not out already) out while you do your primary job of taking care of your kids.
We're not taking about a conflagration here....I have seen MANY, MANY car engines on fire and nothing ever happened to harm anyone except maybe a bit of singed hair and eyebrows when it "blew up" unexpectedly while working on it.
It depends on weather conditions sometimes. It is not the gas itself that explodes...but fumes from the gas. Pumping gas does produce gases, depending on weather, wind and so on...any ignition source can set it off. Even a cell phone.
So agree with the one guy, locate that fire extinguisher coming into the pumps...it is usually close by. And in fire, use it. If it is too far away then yea...get away quickly.
