"A very large portion on my political party really doesn't believe in the constitution." Mitt Romney
Said Romney: “It’s pretty clear that the party is inclined to a populist demagogue message.”
Romney's retirement is a sad commentary on the state of the Republican Party. Like many old guard Republicans before him: Gone are Bob Corker (R-Tenn), Jeff Flake (R-Ariz), Richard Burr (R-N,Car), Ben Sasse (R- Neb) ,Liz Cheney (R- Wyoming), Patrick Toomey (R- Penn), Adam Kinzinger (R- Illinois) and John McCain (R - Ariz) who died in 2018. These were the hard line Republicasn who could be trusted to hold the line on taxes; support military and law enforcement; support the middle class; and above all, tell the truth.
Romney's retirement comes not because is afraid of the fight; it comes because the fight is with his own political party. Romney currently pays $50=,000 a day for security from the mob-right crazies in the party who have threatened to kill him for his voting record. That faction of crazy-wing continues to drive the party - off a cliff it seems, while the rest of the GOP electorate watches in enthusiastic amazement.
The question that Romney's returement raises is this: If one of the two major political parties does not believe in the US Constitution, and promotes violence to force its way among its political leadership, what do you think a presidential victory of their hero and demogogue will look like?
