what do you think of canadas medicare system compared to the united states for profit system?how much a month do you pay per month in fees for coverage?
I don't know enough about it to give an honest opinion. The idea of what it is supposed to mean sounds good, but I've heard there are long, long lines to see the Dr. and that people with money still gett he best health care. I've heard that nearly 50% of your pay is taken out of your check to go toward the health care system.
I am low income and since my son is still under 18, we get state coverage health care. We pay nothing, but I must reapply with copies of all income every 3-4 months and I must report every time I change jobs or get extra income. When he turns 18, we are both cut off. Not all states have this coverage.
I've also heard that people in Canada who do not have kids don't pay taxes toward the school system. I like that idea. My son gets out of school in June and my property taxes keep going up.
Sheesh I live in the US and healthcare here is horrible as a single person its about 15% of my monthly check and if I were to go with the family coverage so that my daughter can be covered its about 40% of my monthly earnings...and still have to pay huge copays...How is it in Canada I might just consider moving...
Well here in Ontario, it cost me about $600 dollars per year. It used to be completely free until a few years ago.
* Note nothing is free * It was paid for by my employer along provincial and federal taxes.
The concept of state health care is not new by any stretch, but when the governments of the day wish not to fund it serious problems can arise quickly.
I guess the difference is here you die waiting for care, and in the US you die trying to pay for it. So it's like comparing apples to apples I guess.
Health insurance, what's that? I work for a small business that doesn't have group health due to the fact that the cost is based on the worker with the worst heath history. They used to have group coverage until Bush changed things with the health care costs. Haven't had insurance in about 3 years now and there is no way I can afford to pay for the meds I'm supposed to be on (blood pressure (expensive), cholesterol ($200+ for one month)). In the meantime I just take an aspirin every day. The only way I can get insurance is thru an employers group health as no one will cover me due to having a history of heart disease (triple by-pass 12 years ago).
Yeah Earl that is the trouble with the corporations providing health insurance. The people that need it most can't get it. If your healthy it's no prob, but don't you dare take serious illness or your screwed.
I know some would say, "Well, get another job at a bigger place." At this point, it would be a waste of time if I did that now for a couple of reasons. 1)I'd be taking a big pay cut if I went elsewhere (pretty much starting over), over $11/hr now, 2)I'm only going to be here until Dec at which time I'll be moving to NC and I'm going to need every penny I can get for that (2 weeks pay and a bonus check for the holidays) Looking forward to this move
